Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Pirtle Family know that we recently made a small donation to the USO in honor of James D. Pirtle US Army Sergeant. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

Happy Birthday Jimmy. I cannot stop thinking of you recently and found this website. To see the words of friends, family and people we dont even know reminds me of why we went to war in the first place. America is the best place and you made sure that it stays the best. You served well and I am very proud of you. Rayne and Brody will pray to you all the time, it breaks my heart but I bow my head and pray with them. I miss you real bad cousin. You are our hero and you will never be forgotten. I hope that you have had a good birthday surfing the clouds. I love you, we love you. I will be seeing you, and I hope that you remember me too.....

April 30, 2010
To the friends and family of SGT "Jimmy" Pirtle,
My name is CPT Jason C. Hall. Jimmy and Ryan both worked for me in Afghanistan. Jimmy was one of the most dedicated Soldiers I have worked with in my 18 years of service and I am not just saying that because of his passing. I would often have to make Jimmy come off of the hilltop to shower and refit. He would stay up at various locations sometimes for a month with out a regular shower. He was perfectly content using baby wipes so that he could keep collecting vital intel for our mission. You must know that the intel collected was of critical importance and saved lives on numerous occasions. It is hard to believe that we are approaching the one year anniversary of his death already. Please know that I think of Jimmy and Ryan ALOT...and tonight, on the anniversary of their passing, I will be putting their bios/ photos into two seperate sealed wine bottles and throwing them into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Cuba where I am currently stationed. Know also, that I will never forget SGT "Jimmy" Pirtle as long as I live and that my heart fills with pride and sadness when I remember the hero I knew in Jimmy.

Dear Jim, Valarie and the Pirtle family. Many times I have started to write you a note or send you a letter since I heard about your loss. I just did not know what to say. I can only imagine the pain you must still be feeling. With a son, daughter-in-law, niece and other relatives in the military at this time, I often wonder how I could handle such a loss. My heart breaks and mourns for you. I hope you can find comfort in the memories and the love that you shared. I extend my prayers and arms to you. And I thank James for his commitment to serve. You should be proud of the hero he became. I love you and miss you. Your friend, Patsy

James and Pattie,
I am SSG Mark Shemwell, SGT Pirtle's team leader for the first seven months of our deployment. As a soldier, Jimmy's passing is the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with. Even though our team had undergone some changes and I had moved over to another team, I still think of Jimmy as my soldier.
Jimmy, or "Pirt" as I referred to him, had an easy way about him. He was very easy to be around and always tried his best to make sure that those around him were comfortable. On occasions when it was not possible for him to go home to his own family, my home was always open to him and he shared many meals with my wife, my daughter and I over the year that we were on Fort Hood prior to our deployment. Most young men shy away from children, but not Pirt.... my little Elise came to think of him as her personal horsie when he came around, and he enthusiastically played with her much to her delight.
Patti and James, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the opportunity to have served with so fine a soldier and to have known so wonderful a person, even if only briefly. I would also like to express to you my deepest condolences for a loss that can never be regained.
Pirt, I'll never forget you. Everything I've been told about your last moments is exactly what I would have expected from you; that you fought to the end and never stopped your mission. Thank you for the times we spent together hanging out with my family, sitting on top of OP Stinky smoking cigars. But mostly, thank you for serving with me. I'll see you again, my friend.

I am in both SGT Pirtles and SPC King's platoon and have known each of them since they were assigned at Ft.Hood. Over this last year, many of us got to see Jimmy do from Pirtle to SGT Pirtle, and although your son was young and served for a fairly short amount of time, he earned those stripes and did everything he did with pride. As we prepare to depart this country, we remember the two family members that will not be returning with us. We will never forget your son or SPC King. I am so proud of these two, they will forever be heroes to all of us that were lucky enough to know and work with them. God Bless your family and the memory of SGT Pirtle.

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

James,
God bless you soldier and thank you for your service to a grateful nation, forever we will mourn you and all of our fallen heroes both before and after you. On 5/6/08 my nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward was killed in action in Iraq while on a routine patrol. My promise to him was that I would never forget him but also those fallen before and after him. When I made that promise to him the day we laid him to his final resting place I did not realize how often I would need to make entries on Legacy and it just breaks my heart knowing that so many other families have and will continue to feel the pain that our family has endured. Since the loss of my nephew I have written on every single legacy page of every fallen soldier and included a photo of my nephew. I encourage you to do the same to Aaron's page. I have done this to honor my nephew but to let you know James is not alone and my nephew is with him and they are now in God's gracious hands waiting for us to join them one day. Pirtle family from the bottom of my heart please except my sincere condolences and may the memories of your Hero carry you through each day for he will never be forgotten!

A Soldier had die out on the
battlefield; broken hearts
are weeping For Them,
But take comfort of knowing
that God had sent Them a
rainbow from heaven;
The Souls of the Soldiers
have gone to there home
in heaven,
Our Loved One's has follow
God's lovely rainbow in the
sky; all the way to the end
of the sky.
That leads all the way to the
other end of the Lord's

So just keep on praying and
trust that God will send us

I cannot imagine what you are going through but you are not alone in your grief. I will eventually get over the shock of Jimmy's death, but I will never, ever get over losing Jimmy. I wish I could have hung out with him more after high school, but our lives went in different directions. I miss him something fierce and the grief within me is harsh since I haven't seen him since I graduated. There is nothing I can say that will help with the pain, I know that. The best I can do is remember him everyday and smile at those memories. I hope you can someday do the same. Rest in peace, Jimmy. I miss you so much

To the parents and family, I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to hold your hand as He gives comfort to you today and for the rest of your life.

Final Roll Call
Did you hear the sad news today?
SGT James Pirtle, a brave American Soldier has passed away.
Called by the Supreme Commander over all.
Today he has made his final roll call.
Come Brothers-In-Arms; let us reverently bow and pray
For our valiant comrade, who has fallen this day.
We’ll drape his casket with a banner of beautiful hues,
Those glorious American colors: red, white and blue.
That star spangled banner he gallantly fought to defend,
Unyielding and undaunted, he fought to win.
He fought bravely and he fought his very best.
Now the Supreme Commander grants him, “eternal rest.
With dignity and honor, we’ll commit his body to the ground,
The bugler will sound “Taps” and we’ll fire the volley rounds.
The final military honors we’ll render somberly and ever so sadly;
“Old Glory” we’ll solemnly precisely fold and reverently give to his family.
Each Memorial Day we will recall James’ name,
And attest that his supreme sacrifice was not in vain;
For this lasting legacy he gave to all generations;
“It’s honorable to respect our flag and to defend our great nation.”
So close ranks fellow warriors, for our ranks are thinning.
We must keep on fighting and keep on winning.
With pride and honor we’ll march and stand tall,
And we’ll proudly - proudly - salute “Old Glory”
‘til we join James at our final roll call.
Farewell SGT James Pirtle - Be At Ease; Rest In Peace
For the Commander, Carroll R. Michaud
May 7, 2009
The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms SGT James Pirtle. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for James. And to James it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. James, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to James’ family and loved ones.

Please know how Deeply Sorry I am, to learn of the devastating loss of Sgt. James Pirtle.
As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly and having lost a brother to war...
I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing. The overwhelming heartache, that seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes.
In the days ahead, you will be going through unimaginable grief, please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.
May the memories of your Brave Young Soldier, remain in your heart always and give you strength through the difficult days and may James, Rest Safely now, in the Loving Care of God and know that he Will Never Be Forgotten.
