James Ulrich Obituary

James Alzon Ulrich, 91, of Falcon Colorado passed away July 8, 2009 from congestive heart failure. Jim was born December 3, 1917 to Isacc and Dorthea Ulrich in Canon City Colorado and had an older brother John Ulrich who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Mary Ulrich, Harold & Vicky Ulrich (son and daughter-in-law), D. Kathleen Ulrich (daughter). There are four grandchildren Jason Ulrich, Daniel Ulrich, Renae (Brian) Mathews, and Tatyanna Ulrich. As a small child, he lived at the upper entrance to the Royal George where his father oversaw collecting and transporting water to Canon City via a large wooden pipeline. The family later moved to a small farm south of Canon City where he spent the rest of his childhood. During the depression he worked at wherever jobs were available including the family farm, mines at Victor/Cripple Creek, and Union Pacific Railroad maintenance facility in Cheyenne Wyoming. Jim joined the Army in February 1942, and was stationed in Iran as a mechanic maintaining trucks that transported war materials to Russia. After World War II, he worked at Camp (Ft.) Carson starting as a mechanic in December 1948, and retiring as a high-level maintenance supervisor in December 1979. Jim received an Associate Engineering degree from Graceland College in Iowa after graduating from Canon City High School. On June 13, 1948, he married his childhood friend Mary Hershner in Colorado Springs where they resided before moving to Falcon Colorado in 1972. Besides repairing friends' vehicles and electrical equipment, he enjoyed traveling to scenic locations and exploring mining sites where his wife would take pictures. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church. Memorial services will be at the Swan Law Funeral Home, 501 N. Cascade, Colorado Springs CO (719) 471-9900.
