Janet Hoag Obituary

Hoag
Janet Chalgren Hoag
October 26, 1924 - November 17, 2017
Janet Chalgren Hoag, age 93, passed away Friday, November 17, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she had resided for 40 years.
Janet Johanna Chalgren was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 26, 1924, to Edward Arnold Chalgren and Anna Catherine Eckstrm Chalgren, and was raised there in a community-minded immigrant Swedish-American urban home and childhood - filled with music. Janet Chalgren attended the University of Minnesota, earning an undergraduate degree in Education, while also working at an early Minneapolis television station. Post-World War II California drew Janet to immediately begin her dedicated teaching career and new life, in the sunny beach towns of Southern California.
Janet Chalgren and John Bannatyne Hoag III met in Southern California and were married in 1951 in Santa Barbara, California. They moved shortly thereafter to Pensacola (where they began their family) and to Coral Gables, Florida, for a total of 10 years. The family moved to Hermosa Beach, California in 1961, driving cross-country in a VW Camper Van; moving to Newport Beach a year later. The family resided in Newport Beach, California, for 16 years, where, as an Elementary School Teacher, Janet was recognized as Teacher of The Year for the neighboring Huntington Beach School District. Janet was a loving wife and a caring parent to two children, John B. Hoag IV and wife Joanne Goldbaum (of Colorado Springs), and Janet "Lisa" Leslie Hoag (Mieritz) (of Colorado Springs; now deceased). Janet was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband (deceased 1988); by her three siblings: Edward Gustaf Arnold Chalgren, Jr., Eleanor Anna Chalgren Lutz and Ione Ruth Chalgren Martin (formerly of Colorado Springs); by her mother-in-law, Marion Rhoads Sullivan; sister-in-law, Joanne Hoag Brennan; and brother-in-law, John "Jack" Brennan. Janet's son-in-law, Patrick William Mieritz, lives in Colorado Springs, as does her grandson, Daniel Gustave Mieritz. Janet's two granddaughters, Marina Kato Hoag and Emily Anna Mieritz Heyne and husband James, both live out-of-state.
Family and friends will remember Janet for her admirable determination, professionalism, clever mind, friendly manner, sparkling eyes, wry humor and ready smile. Janet lived a remarkable and productive 93 years of diligence and happiness in both her family and professional worlds.
A local private memorial open house will be held in Colorado Springs on Sunday afternoon, December 3, 2017. A final memorial service is being planned for the Winter of 2018, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Please contact Shrine Of Remembrance for further details for the memorial open house or service.
Janet has supported educational, civic and environmental causes throughout her entire life. Her final memorials may be made in her name, Janet Chalgren Hoag, with the family requesting notification including the donor's contact information. The family prefers donations to these four organizations (no ranking): 350.org (350.org), The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF.org), The Nature Conservancy (Nature.org) or Project Drawdown (Drawdown.org).

Dear Cousin John,
Emily & Danielle & Marina...
Your loss is immeasurable.
My fondest memories of my sweet wonderful
Aunt Jan are sitting in she & JB's living room in Hermosa Beach on that adorable leather pig ottoman, playing with her cool light spray sculpture & being fed the most amazing Swedish meatballs & green apple with goat cheese.
Christmas was her specialty...spinning Scandinavian candle trees adorned the house, as she made yummy Rosette cookies sprinkled with powdered sugar.
The beautiful view from the livingroom & walks along the beach in Corona Del Mar, where she would tell me what all the strange plants & birds along the beach were.
She was always ready with a smile & a hanky up her sleeve...
She will remain in my heart always as she now embraces the energy of Lila, Nana & JB in a kinder place.

As Your Child, we overlapped and shared in so many ways...
As Your Child, we each were unique, different and developing individuals and souls...
As Your Friend, I learned and grew to know You in various ways over My Life... and Yours...
In Our Relationship and Bond, tendencies emerged or evolved, while complications and accommodation occurred...
In Our Family, internal dynamics and interactions became habits, behavior and legacy, while external references, norms and guidance became compromised...
In Our Lives, we always were Mother and Son... Loving and Living the ways we knew how and the ways we thought were best and accepted...
In Our Lives, We passed Our Hopes and Dreams back and forth.. and now...only in our hearts and memories...

Dear cousin John,
My memories of your mother are off a very happy, positive, loving, and encouraging woman. A wonderful Aunt to me and youngest sister to my father. Dad was always very proud of his youngest sister. She had a special place in his heart.May the God of all comfort be very close to you at this difficult time.

Joanne and John,so much that I could say, but all is in my heart. Janet was a blessed lady to have you both in her lives. It was an honor to care for her and to be able to love her. She will always stay in my heart. Mary....she will be forever missed.
