Janet Smith Obituary

Jan Smith, 67, of Colorado Springs passed away February 13, 2012 after a long battle with ovarian cancer. She was a long-time employee of the Pikes Peak Library District where she worked as a library technician. Her illness forced her to retire in 2008 after more than 20 years of service. Jan was the daughter of Giles and Hazel Kise. She graduated Madison High School in Minnesota and attended Augustana College in South Dakota. Jan is survived by her husband Don, sons Paul and Mike, daughter-in-law Kasie (Mike), and grandson Jack. She was preceded in death by her parents and one great nephew. Jan tremendously enjoyed working at the library and being able to spend time in downtown Colorado Springs. She loved her ability to be able to sing in the choir at First Lutheran Church, was an avid reader and an even more avid Broncos fan. A public viewing will be held at Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 North Cascade Avenue from 4-7 PM on Friday, February 17, 2012. The memorial service for Jan will be held at First Lutheran Church, 1515 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs at 10:30 AM Saturday, February 18, 2012. A private inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the First Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

Janet will be greatly missed at all the family gatherings. Such positive energy and such enjoyment of life. As a cousin growing up, I received wonderful hand-me-downs from Janet and remembered as something very special. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this sad loss.

"The Alto Connection" will surely miss our "ring leader"! I will always remember Jan standing next to me at Gallery of Living Art and telling me to "pipe down" because I sometimes sang more loudly than she thought I should! She was so much fun to be around and I will miss our "tea talks"!

Also, I will be forever grateful for her sitting with my mother, who was from out of town to await news of my bone marrow biopsy, which began our cancer walk together. She was such a selfless, loving friend.

Don, Paul, Mike, Kasie, and Jack, we are so sorry for your loss, but it is heaven's gain!

Jan was a lovely person...inside and out. I will miss her beautiful smile and the warm kindnesses she had for others. May you find comfort in knowing that she will always be smiling now. You must be proud of what a wonderful friend, wife, mother and grandmother she was. May she rest in peace knowing that her time on this earth... touched so many...Esther Carrick

In loving memory of Jan on this day: my heartfelt hope is that Don, Paul, Mike, Kasie and Jack may find peace today in knowing that so many share in their sorrow. I worked at the library with Jan from 1987 to 2008. She has always been an inspiration to me to put my best face forward regardless of any situation, and to be strong no matter what comes your way. Jan will always be a pillar of strength to me and will be remembered by all as a beautiful person, both inside and out. Rest in peace, my beautiful and dear friend.

Jan will be missed by all of us. She was an amazing, caring, loving woman, wife, mother, and friend, who always thought of others before herself. She always inspired and encouraged me and made me feel so special. I loved her passion for the Broncos and enjoyed talking to her about our team. I am praying that the peace of God will hold and carry you through this difficult time. Much love ....
