Janie Bell Obituary

Janie Lapsley Bell, 97, of Turner, OR died November 24, 2010. She was born January 27, 1913 in Clarkton, NC to Robert A. and Katherine {Abernathy) Lapsley. Janie graduated from Agnes Scott College (BA), and the University of Chicago (M.S). In 1943, she received her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Illinois where she met her husband, Dr. J. Clarence Bell. Dr. Janie Bell was a gifted teacher and passed her love and understanding of mathematics to several generations of students by teaching all levels of classes from kindergarten through graduate school. Her professional career included work at Holly Springs College, University of Illinois, Ohio State University, Montreat College, Warren Wilson College, and secondary and primary public and private schools. Janie had a deep faith in her Lord Jesus Christ and served Him whenever and wherever she could. In each of the churches Janie joined, she filled whatever role was needed, from Sunday school teacher to building committee leader. Her dedicated and infectious spirit inspired those who knew her. Janie spent the majority of her life in Columbus, OH where she and Clarence raised their three children. In her latter life, Janie lived in Montreat, NC, Tehachapi, CA, Monument, CO and Turner, OR. A remarkable person, Janie will be remembered for her quick wit, keen understanding, appreciation of the arts and sciences, and her unwavering Christian faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, and daughter, Katherine Bell Hunter. She leaves to treasure her memory her son John C. Bell (Rhonda) of Aumsville, OR, daughter Martha Bell Aston (Graeme) of Colorado Springs, CO, grandsons Elijah Hunter (Miho), Clinton Bell (Christina), Jacob Bell (Jamie), Nathan Aston (Ashley) and granddaughter Victoria Aston. She was a lady, a scholar and a Christian.
