January 17, 1938 July 18, 2018
Jean Ann Haecker Scheel, age 80, formally from Colorado Springs, CO, passed away on July 18, 2018. She was born on January 17, 1938 in San Antonio, Texas, the only child of Herbert and Edna Wesch Haecker.
Jean Ann graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1956, where she was a member of the Purple Jackets, and began working for USAA in the underwriting department. On August 29, 1959, she married the love of her life, 2nd Lieutenant Clarence Scheel, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in San Antonio. Shortly thereafter, they embarked on a 21-year Army career, following Clarence's military assignments around the world.
While stationed in Spokane, Washington, they welcomed their first daughter, Denise Marie, in 1960. Following deployment to Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany they welcomed Dawn Elizabeth in 1962 and Debra Renee in 1964. Throughout additional military assignments in Sunnyvale, California; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; West Point, New York; and Heidelberg, Germany, Jean Ann was a supportive military spouse and mother, participating in and hosting Officers' Wives' Club activities and serving as Brownie and Girl Scout leader, PTA officer, and CCD teacher.
Following Clarence's military retirement in 1980, they settled in Colorado Springs, Colorado for 18 years. During this time Jean Ann managed the Bridal Registry and Fine China and Crystal department for a major department store. In 1998, Jean Ann and Clarence returned home to Texas for good, settling in Garden Ridge, just outside of San Antonio. Their retirement years have been filled with genealogy research, Liederkranz singing club activities, and spending time with their large extended family and friends. Jean Ann was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, 3 brothers-in-law and 1 great-nephew.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of almost 59 years, LTC (retired) Clarence A. Scheel; by her children Denise (Robert) Staudt, Dawn Scheel (Mark Jones), and Debra (Steven) Allison; by her nine grandchildren, Jason (Amanda) Staudt, Brian (Lynsie) Staudt, Andrew Vose & fiancee Stephanie, Daniel Staudt, Ashley Allison, Tyler Allison, Nathan Staudt (Zachary Carter), Alec Jones and Emily Jones, and by the special joys of her life, her four great-grandchildren, Conrad, Dawsyn, Nigel, and Hayden Staudt. She will also be fondly remembered by her nine sisters-in-law, eight brothers-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 23, 2018 from 5-8:30pm, with Rosary to be recited at 7pm, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 10am at OLPH followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.
