Jean Kathryn Smith went to be with the Lord on April 5, 2025. She was born in Troy, New York on May 15, 1945, the daughter of Joseph John and Iris Alma Trumbull Civalier. She lived in Round Lake, NY until the age of 11 when she moved with her family to Rotterdam Junction, NY. She graduated from Schalmont High School in 1963. When she was very young, Jean determined she would be a nurse. She graduated from Plattsburg College, obtaining a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in School Nurse Teaching in 1967. She obtained her Master's Degree in Adult Health Promotion & Illness Management at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in May 1990.
Over the course of her cancer nursing, Jean created many protocols and outcome activities to assure the best possible cancer care for her patients. Jean was blessed with providing care to cancer patients from 1976-2009 at Penrose Cancer Center of Colorado Springs. After retirement, she continued to provide gratis care to anyone God sent for such assistance. Jean was a member of First Presbyterian Church for many decades and served in countless ways.
Jean is survived by her beloved husband of 35 years, Reverend James W. Smith, cherished daughters Jennifer (Eric) Weber and Julie (Erik) Hoggan, adored step-daughters Sarah (Mark) Hirleman, and Rachel (Keith) Wood, siblings Anne, Jack and Carol, nine precious grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Jean was truly a servant for Jesus at work and play. Anyone who spent time with her felt loved. She enjoyed gardening, hiking, playing with and encouraging her grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church Foundation, which accomplishes a variety of missions for Jesus Christ. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday May 24.
