Jeanette Grice Obituary

Jeanette E. Grice, 74, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2016. She was born in Colorado Springs on September 22, 1941, the third of eight children born to the late Michael and Adelia Trujillo.

Jeanette graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1959. After high school, she worked for a short time at Ent Air Force Base before her marriage on October 21, 1961 to James L. Grice, who preceded her in death. After Jim's death, she worked in Colorado College's Financial Aid office and the United States Olympic Committee's Drug Control Program for the remainder of her career. Jeanette served on the Board of Directors for La Casa Contenta Residential Treatment Center for Adolescents and was a dedicated volunteer with the Hallando Program, a Christian youth program working with teens. Jeanette was a loyal alumna of St. Mary's High School, and served as class agent for SMHS Alumni Association and on several class reunion committees. She enjoyed crafts, reading, and was a passionate fan of the Denver Broncos.

Jeanette was an extraordinarily strong and admirable woman, overcoming many difficult challenges in life. Although she was tragically separated from her beloved Jim on May 4, 1963, she is finally reunited with him. Her greatest joy was spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren. She loved and was devoted to all of them.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Karen Burghart (Gary), her son James Grice, and seven grandchildren: Alex Biggs, Mia Biggs, James Grice II, Emma Grice, Andrew Grice, Peter Burghart (Cristina), and Sarah Burghart. Jeanette is also survived by two brothers, Joseph Trujillo (Barbara) of Colorado Springs and Michael Trujillo (Ruth) of Eugene, Oregon, and four sisters: Teresa DeSousa (Rudy) of Longmont, Colorado, MaryAnn Stroeve (Tony) of Louisville, Colorado, and Dolores Herbst and Angie Hall (Lee), both of Colorado Springs, along with many nieces and nephews. One brother, Charles David Trujillo, preceded her in death.

Visitation will take place Wednesday, February 24 from 4 to 8 PM with Rosary beginning at 5 PM at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 N Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for 2 pm Thursday, February 25 at St. Mary's Cathedral, 22 W. Kiowa Street, Colorado Springs, followed by a reception to celebrate Jeanette's life from 3:30 to 5:30 at Patty Jewett Golf Course, 900 E Espanola St, Colorado Springs. Cremation and interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's High School, Colorado Springs, 80909, the American Diabetes Association, Denver, CO 80211, or the National Kidney Foundation, Denver, CO 80246.

I moved from Colorado Springs in 1974 when I married the love of my life. I made many return trips to Colorado Springs to visit and to attend class reunions, and ever visit Jeanette was the first person I called. We had so much fun and so many laughs. She was such a special person and friend. She never forgot a birthday card, or Christmas card or just cause she was thinking of me. So many times I have gone to the phone to call her to share something with her and then remember she is gone. I truly miss my VERY SPECIAL FRIEND. May she be resting in the arms of Jesus!

I served on the La Casa Contenta and Hallando board with Jeanette. I valued the time I spent with her and other members making things happen. She had a great sense of humor and we all admired the input and advice she brought to the table. She was well liked and respected for the work she did in the community. Her family was so important to her and I'm glad my wife Karyl and I came to know all of them.
Condolences and sympathy go out to all the family

My Aunt Pinkie was so very sweet. My son Daniel, began calling her "Grandma Pinkie" even though she was his great aunt, it was just her nurturing spirit toward all who were endearing to her.

My Aunt Pinky ... Just the thought of my aunt makes me smile , so many memories of her , cheering from the side lines at Jimmy's soccer games , putting rollers in mine and Karen's hair on Saturday night for church the next day . I asked her once what was in the old freezer downstairs and she told me ," that's where I keep the Girl Scouts " , we had the same kind of humor . Aunt Pinky took care of me in the summers when I was there and I always felt welcome , not a guest welcome but like I was her own and I knew she loved me . I wish I could have spent more time with her . Aunt Pinky will always be a good memorie. For me , I love that lady .

Aunt Pinkie,
I will always remember your Gremlin (Long live AMC lol) and your curlers. Mostly I remember your infrequent smiles and laughs, your love of CC, and your guidance. I will miss you always.

My Dearest Friend, I have missed our visits for the last few years and the sound of your voice. We grew up together and so did our kids at least for a while. You and your family have always been so special. The precious memories of school dances and sharing a Margarita or two and giggles about so many things. Secrets shared and wonderful memories since First Communion and continuing for years after graduation. I will miss you forever but am so thankful for the memories. I love you forever. At long last you are out of pain and resting in the Loving Arms of Jesus. Your forever friend, Judy Kochman McClain

The little hearts that felt her love.

My first encounter with Mrs. Grice was a memorable one. I was probably 10 or 11 years old and playing with Jim in his back yard. We were probably throwing the football (Morton to Moses) or shooting hoops on his basket attached to a big tree.

Even though Jim was supposed to stay in his back yard, the alley was calling and we drifted out of his back yard and down the alley at least 4 or 5 houses to see what kind of trouble we could get into... then it happened... a loud voice came from the direction of his house "JIMMY!!! WHERE ARE YOU!?!? YOU BETTER GET YOUR BUTT HOME!! NOW!!!" Immediately, Jim sprinted towards his house and I split in the other direction towards my house. Holy Moly!! I don't think we ever ran as fast as we did that day. LOL!! I am also pretty sure we never drifted out of his back yard again the whole summer. LOL!!

Thanks Mrs. Grice for keeping all of us punk neighborhood kids from getting into too much trouble with Jim that summer. Jim, I am so sorry for your loss.

I was in the same graduating class with Jeanette however I left Colorado Springs right after high school. My dad was transferred back to the east coast. But almost all of the communications from the class came from Jeanette or a committee she was on. She had a big part in keeping us all together. I was able to get to many of the later reunions because of her. I thank her (and the committee) for organizing those great reunions and for sending the many emails involved. May she rest in peace.

Jeanette and I have been very good friends for many years, I will miss her in my visits to Colorado Springs, at least 1-2 times every year and our weekly phone visits. Jeanette was a special person, she loved her family. I know she will be in peace and suffer no more. We had some fun times getting to lunch with her big oxygen tank and Denny taking us for ice cream - we will remember her. Love to Jeanette and the family who will miss her. Jane and Denny Young
