December 29, 2021

Jeffrey Brian Hovermale, 57, of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed away peacefully on December 29, 2021 with his family at his side. He is now with Mother Earth and the great spirit gods.

Jeffrey is known throughout the Colorado Springs region for his decades of service to the people and land. Born in Smithsburg, Maryland on October 20, 1964, Jeffrey attended Allegany College of Maryland before serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador. Prior to moving to Colorado Springs, Jeffrey held a variety of positions with the U.S. Forest Service, starting in Yampa, Colorado. He retired from the U.S. Forest Service as the Lands, Special Uses, and Minerals Staff Officer on the Pikes Peak Ranger District. His achievements include leading the agency's role in building the new Summit Complex on Pikes Peak – America's Mountain and consultations with seven Tribes on the management of the sacred summit. Within the community, Jeffrey worked to support and improve the Mill Street Neighborhood and was widely known for his gentleness and generosity.

Jeffrey maintained a sense of youthful curiosity his whole life, and found joy in large and small adventures. He had hiked most of the trails on the Pikes Peak Ranger District, was a lover of bluegrass music and live concerts, rode his Schwinn cruiser around downtown, was known for listening rather than talking, was an avid traveler, and made time for a regular Sunday drive to points of interest throughout Southern Colorado.

Jeffrey will be lovingly remembered by his mother, his brother and sister-in-law, his nephew and niece, and his great-niece and great-nephew. Jeffrey was predeceased by his father.

A celebration of Jeffrey's life will be held at a later date in the new year. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made toward the maintenance of Memorial Grove via www.rockymountaineers.us.

I am very sad to learn that Jeff has passed on the spirit world far too soon. He was a very compassionate man with so many unique talents. We worked together at Pikes Peak RD and I have very fond memories of our adventures there. He was very dedicated to doing good in all facets of his life. He would get a twinkle in his eyes when he was telling a good story. I know he is a shining light in the night sky.

Our prayers are with you Kathy, David, Molly and family.
The sudden loss of Jeff has saddened us all. Our families have shared many years together and hold many precious memories. I remember the day he was born and how honored I was to be named his Godmother. Our holidays and special events were always spent together.
Jeff was loving, kind and full of positive energy. His early years as a volunteer led him into a lifetime of service to protecting the environment and giving to others. He will be remembered for the many U.S. Forrest Service projects. Someone so special can never be forgotten.
Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your heart. Please remember that we love and care about you and will be here for you always.

Wanted to extend my sincere sympathies and prayers to your family. I have worked on the Leadville RD since 1983 and worked with Jeff a lot as I worked in real property. He was always a pleasure to work with (always helpful, courteous and kind). Know you will all miss him as well as all of us in the Forest Service. I will always have "happy" thoughts when I think about Jeff and pray your memories will help you during this time and in the futures. Sincerely, Linda Helmick

I will always remember Jeff as a gentle soul that even while moving among us, he was somehow on his own plane of existence that was on more of a spiritual level. Even though I knew him through work, I considered him a friend and will always remember our conversations that were well beyond any of our work interactions. I am deeply saddened and will miss him. My deepest condolences to his Mom and family
