Jeffrey Mackin Obituary

Jeffrey Wayne Mackin, 51, of Colorado City died Monday, October 31, 2005. He was born in Cripple Creek on May 14, 1954 to Wayne S. and Dorothy M. Mackin who preceded him in death. Mackin attended schools in Cripple Creek and Tucson, AZ, graduating from Cripple Creek-Victor High School in 1972. Mackin was known for his hand-tooled leatherwork, his skills at bartering for antiques and collectibles, his love of music, a quirky and creative imagination, a fondness for cats, and mostly for his compassion and generosity toward his many friends. He played guitar, composed songs and had a voice that sounded a bit like Cat Stevens. Some may remember Mackin for delivering their Gazette Telegraph through wind, hail, sleet and snow seven days a week without a break for nearly ten years. Mackin is survived by daughter, Rebecca Ruth Mackin; brother, Stephen K. and wife, Bonnie S. Mackin of Cripple Creek and Manitou; sister, Susan M. and husband, Lewis S. Anderson Jr. of Decatur, GA; nephew, Kirk S. Mackin and family of Fort Collins; and niece, Stacy D. Mackin of Cripple Creek. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Jeff's name to Dream Power Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 62923, Colorado Springs, CO 80962 for the support of cat rescue efforts that include spaying/neutering and matching them with cat lovers in good homes. A Memorial Service and interment of ashes will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2005 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Cripple Creek, and Fourth and Carr. Family and friends are invited to gather afterward at the Imperial Hotel for a reception and to share remembrances.

When I first met Jeff he was wearing a Superman costume. At the time I think he thought he was Superman. But as we both have aged over many years I have always been able to see the twinkle in Jeff's blue eyes. And a big grin on his face. Jeff, Brad, and I have spent many summers together in Cripple Creek as we were growing up and in our adult years. Jeff took me to my first melodrama when he was 6 and I was 4. He also kept telling everyone at the hotel I was not his girlfriend. I have told my kids that story many a time. I can still see him jumping over the wall to our back door. Jeff I will miss you dearly and the entire family sends you our love. Keep the twinkle in your eyes. Ann Guinn Milligan, Thelmarie Guinn, Hugh Guinn, and family.
