Jerome Busemeyer Obituary

Jerome P. Busemeyer, a longtime Monument resident and one of the city's most respected and honored police officers, passed away at home Sept. 11 after a lengthy illness. Mr. Busemeyer led a remarkable life, from his boyhood in St. Louis, Mo., to his service with the CSPD (1960-1980), to his and wife Frances' four children, to later years as a sought-after artist and woodcarver.

In 1972 Sgt. Busemeyer was on patrol with a trainee and stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. He approached the vehicle and was shot without warning by the driver, a murderer who had escaped from a prison in North Carolina. The gravely-injured officer kept safe the young trainee and managed to move around the car and, as he said, "get the drop on the guy" with his own weapon. The surprised suspect surrendered, later to be convicted and imprisoned.

Rushed to a hospital with critical blood loss, Mr. Busemeyer underwent much surgery, losing a kidney, his spleen and some intestine, with a bullet forever left in his back. Extensive

rehabilitation followed.

He received the CSPD's elite Medal of Valor for his heroism and actions under fire. He and Frances lived and worked on their small ranch, both becoming well known in Monument, often assisting charitable causes. Especially important, and touching on his own ancestry, was making known and helping with the needs of Native Americans.

While Jerome was his proper name -- and used for his voice mail message -- literally thousands of people, from vagrants to those in high office, from fellow officers to the coffee shop regulars of his later years -- knew him as Jerry.

His interests and studies were nothing less than encyclopedic, including American West history; virtually all forms of the arts; world religions; and responsible government or its lack.

Yet beyond that was an innate interest in easing people's burdens. One could hardly sit with him in any restaurant in El Paso County without at least a few friendly interruptions and recollections.

Mr. Busemeyer remained active in the community despite later heart problems, back surgeries and chronic pain

A fall on ice in 2010 led to hospitalization yet again and he lost the function of his diaphragm. He was in intensive care and his family was told that survival odds were 20 percent.

Again, incredible resolve and the unstinting faith and care of family helped him rally. And when a nurse came to ask, per hospital policy, if he wanted to go on record as a potential organ donor, Mr. Busemeyer's immediate answer was , "What's left?"

He did return home and, carrying supplemental oxygen, also returned to many of his interests during these past five years.

Mr. Busmeyer knew the sadness of losing dear friends but ever worked to lean forward, into the joys and progressions of life. Adhering to traditional Catholic Mass, he quietly demonstrated time and again that, in a word, kindness was his religion.

His loving family includes: his wife Frances Garcia; daughters Matianita (Carlos) Vargas; Consuelo Busemeyer (Justin); Maria; and sons Jerome (Yajaira); and Joseph. Also: nine grandchildren, great-grandchildren: Veronica, Andreas, Ricardo, Joseph, Anthony, Celeste, Angelo,, Summer, and Shane; special nieces Angie, Christy, and nephew Bernard; sisters Phyllis and Mary; brother Joe; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was pre-deceased by parents Joseph and Elinor and two sisters.

Visitation will be at Cappadona Funeral Home, 1020 E. Fillmore, September 17 from 5-7 p.p. with rosary at 7 p.m. Services will be September 18 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's, with burial slated for 3:30 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery.

My condolences to the Busemeyer and the CSPD family on the passing of Lt. Busemeyer. He was an instructor I had way back when the City changed the criteria of how people became security guards.

Frances and Family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy over your loss of Jerry. My words are lacking when attempting to describe Jerry's infectious personality and his desire to be helpful in any way. His generosity and compassion for his fellow man was exceptional. He sought no recognition for his deeds of kindness and extraordinary thoughtfulness. His works of Godliness have gone on for decades behind the scenes with only the recipients sometime knowing a little history behind the gift. Much like the parish priest who works quietly without fan-fair behind the scene.
May God bless Jerry for his caring of others.

I was 14 when I first met Jerry. My folks had just bought a restaurant on Nevada and he was at that time walking the the area He would come in for a cup of coffee and would buy a cup for a soldier or a down and out person. He was so kind and soft spoken and always willing to help wherever. He would take time to listen but was never judgemental. He was a great cop.

Sgt. Busemeyer, it is with great sadness that I learned of your passing. You have made an impact on so many lives without really knowing it. I remember your kind face, your strength, your gentle humor, your smile, and the fact that although you were doing your job, you were never judgmental toward anyone. I came to know you as a pre-teen into my early 20's when my married life took me to California, but you were never forgotten in my memories. You will truly be missed by me and so many others whose lives you have touched. Go rest now in our Father's house until we are all called up into the clouds. In the Almighty Name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior....Amen and Amen. ~ Sandra I. Estrada (Trujillo) ~
