Jerry was born in Chariton, Iowa, to Lloyd and Ruth Moore on July 15, 1937. He grew up in Chariton and graduated from Chariton High School in 1955.
Jerry attended Iowa State University, where he lived in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and graduated with a degree in mathematics. He was commissioned into the US Air Force (Medical Service Corps) and went to the University of Iowa to study hospital administration. He married Jacquilyn Kay Gittings on June 19, 1960 after she graduated from Iowa State. Jerry's career took them to Selfridge AFB, Michigan; Lackland AFB, Texas; Incirlik AFB, Turkey; Edwards AFB, California; Maxwell AFB, Alabama; Richards Gebaur AFB, Missouri; San Vito AFB, Italy; Rhein Mein AFB, Germany; and Little Rock AFB, Arkansas. A highlight of Jerry's career that he would frequently recollect was when his hospital unit in Turkey deployed to the eastern part of the country to tend to civilian survivors of the deadly Varto–Muş earthquake of 1966.
Jerry retired from the Air Force in 1981, and he and Jackie stayed in North Little Rock. He attended classes at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) to pursue a second career in teaching. He was a math teacher at Oak Grove High School for several years before taking a position teaching at UCA. He also taught at a local correctional facility.
In 1997 when Jerry & Jackie fully retired, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. There, Jerry and Jackie were both very involved at Vista Grande Community Church. Among other things, Jerry was a choir stalwart as well as the church handyman: mowing, fixing sprinklers, and generally maintaining the church. He was also active in the local Kiwanis chapter.
Jerry leaves behind his sons Jeff (Rhonda), Jason (Terri), and Jon (Ginger); grandchildren Meghan (Chad) Davis, Tessa (Paul Vanasse), Tory, Carmen (Chad) Avink, Natalie, Ian, and Mia; his sisters Karen (Chuck) Moon, Terri (Ken – deceased) Gillette, sister-in-law Jeanne Gittings Robeson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Jackie, his brother Earl, and parents Lloyd and Ruth Moore.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 15 at 11:00 at Vista Grande Community Church, 5460 N Union Blvd, Colorado Springs. Memorial gifts in honor of Jerry may be given to the church's Mission Fund.
