Jo, age 77, was born in Gallup, New Mexico to parents Fred and Adeline Melton. She passed away in Colorado Springs after a tough and determined multi-year fight against emphysema. After an Idyllic childhood of horseback riding, nationally ranked bowling and family trips to the pond, which she generously called a lake, she headed to Colorado College to pursue her dreams. After graduating with Sociology and Psychology degrees, she entered CC's MAT program and received her masters in education. Thus began a celebrated thirty plus year career inspiring, educating, and enriching the lives of all the students who were lucky enough to be taught and cared for by "Mrs. M". She began her career at Columbia Elementary, moving on to North Middle School and finally she helped District 11 open the district's first alternative middle school (Tesla). She never met a "bad kid" or a kid she couldn't reach. She had the innate ability to find the spark that would light up the world of possibilities in front of them. She truly loved each and every moment of her teaching career and only stepped aside when her health deserted her.
In 1970 she married her life partner of almost 55 years Steve Meyers. In 1976 they were blessed with the arrival of their daughter Nicole and three years later, son Ryan joined the crew. She cherished her family and especially her grandson Darien who entered her life in 2001. Jo had the infectious personality that brightened the lives of all who knew her. She leaves behind a multitude of dear lifelong friends who knew she deeply loved and cared for each and every one of them with that extraordinary heart of hers. She loved her gambling, bowling, bridge and spending treasured time with family and friends. She was an intensely religious person. Hardly a day went by without a devotional reading. She would send up her praise to the lord for her blessings even when dealing with her own daily struggles.
Jo is survived by her husband Steve, daughter Nicole, son Ryan and grandson Darien in addition to furry Diamond and long-time teaching teammate Charles Dews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Adeline Melton, her husband's parents, Justin and Harriet Meyers, as well as her brother Jim. To say she will be dearly missed would be a monumental understatement.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that you send up a prayer to our newest angel or make contributions in her name to B-COS We Care, 405 South Nevada Ave. A celebration of her extraordinary life will be held on October 18th at two o'clock at the Colorado Springs Country Club.

I was so blessed to have Mrs. Meyers & Mr. Dews as my teachers in Elementary school. The love they both shared for their Kiddos in school was unmatched and I will forever be blessed having been one of "their kids"
My deepest condolences to her family and friends. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Jo when she lived in Gallup and she lived only a couple for houses down from me. We only re-connected abut a year ago on Facebook. My prayers go out to you and the family.

I had Mrs. M for 3rd and 4th when she team taught with Mrs. Butler and again in 6th grade with Mr. Dews (who I also had for 5th)! She made sure I was in her class and always made sure that I was challenged! She was a spitfire and if I remember correctly (it´s been 40+ years) but I´m pretty sure she was a big Cowboys fan! Love you Mrs. M! Thank you!

She came into our lives when our son played basketball at Palmer with her grandson, and from that moment she welcomed our family as her own. We saw her at every game, always cheering, always supporting, and always ready with advice, guidance, and love whenever life turned upside down. The impact she had on our family is immeasurable. She cared deeply for everyone when my grandson was born, she couldn´t wait to meet him. She reminded us that it truly takes a village, and she was always part of ours. Whether it was a quick chat filled with laughter or a meaningful conversation, she made time for everyone. She will be truly missed, but her love and kindness will always remain in our hearts.
