Joan R. Barela (Lopez), 72, passed away on January 16th, 2023. She was born on February 28th, 1950, in Colorado Springs, CO, the daughter of the late Jake A. and Mary M. (Martinez) Lopez.
Joan graduated from Palmer High School in 1968. Following graduation, she attended Midwest Business College. Shortly thereafter, she married her one true love, Fred Barela, on November 23rd, 1968. They recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two older brothers, Jake W. and Savino P. Lopez, and an older sister, Barbara Martinez. Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter and sister. As such, she is survived by her husband, Fred Barela, and her daughters, Annalisa Barela, Antoinette (Felix) Martinez and Angelina Barela; five grandchildren, Freddie (Ramona) Barela II, Marcus (Selina) Garcia, Chelsea (Alex) Flores, Andrea Martinez, and Lorenzo Martinez; four great grandchildren, Daniel, Ava, Olivianna and Linkon; two sisters, Elizabeth (Edward) Mascarenas and Loretta Vigil. One brother, Gerard (Tomie) Lopez, and many nieces and nephews.
Joan was a woman of faith which was especially important to her. She was an avid reader and loved to cook and play games and above all, Joan loved her family the most and enjoyed the times they all spent together.
A Rosary will be held at Cappadona Funeral Home, 1020 E. Fillmore Street, Colorado Springs on January 31, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will precede the Rosary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on February 1, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, 1830 S. Corona Avenue, followed by interment at Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 Hancock Express, Colorado Springs.

My Aunt Joanne was a beautiful soul a woman with the biggest heart I will miss her so much I loved her so dearly I pray for the family of the barelas my uncle Fred I hope that she rests in peace all the girls my heart and soul go out to you from me and art and I'm devastated I miss her I love her and I'm glad that she's at least with our Lord savior and may He keep her in his arms and then she rejoice in heaven with the rest of the family reunited with her brothers her sister her mother her father and God bless that beautiful woman my Aunt Joanne she will be missed.
