Joan Johnson Obituary

Joan Yvonne
(Barr) Johnson

June 24, 2024

Joan Yvonne Johnson, former Colorado Springs resident, returned home to the Lord the morning of June 24, 2024. Joan succumbed to complications related to heart surgery. She displayed great courage in pursuing a complicated surgery in hopes of a more robust life.
Joan was born February 13, 1946, at Camp Atterbury in Indiana to Lt. Col. Arthur W. Barr and his wife, Grace Virginia. Joan was the Barr's second child, joining her big brother Artie. The Barr family spent Joans early years traveling the world as Lt. Col Barr was a pilot in the US Army and valiantly fought for our country in WWII and Korea. After spending time in Panama and Japan, the Barr's settled in Colorado Springs, Colorado where Joan attended and graduated from Widefield High School. Upon graduation from high school, Joan matriculated to the University of Colorado where she met the love of her life, Robert Johnson.
Joan and Robert spent time in Boulder, Colorado, Austin, Texas and Hudson, Ohio before calling Marietta, Ga home. Joan spent most of her time raising her two sons, Gregory and Bret. She was a loving and dedicated mother who enjoyed watching her boys compete in athletics. As an adult, Joan discovered the second love of her life…tennis. She climbed to the highest competitive heights of Atlanta's ALTA tennis association becoming AA city champion. Even after her body forced her to discontinue her competitive life, she loved nothing more than watching Wimbledon with her strawberries and cream.
In Joan's later years, her grandchildren and great grandchildren became the light of her life. She adored her six grandchildren – Morgan, Chase, Wynne, Caitlyn, Cara and Kelly. And in December of 2022 she met her first Great grandchild, Beau.
Joan will be fondly remembered by young and old. She touched many lives with her caring and loving ways. While we are saddened by her passing, we were all enriched by her living. Rest in peace, Mother.

Joan has been a dear friend to me for many years. Our Shared military background made it easy for us to believe in the same values, morals, and responsibilities. She was someone I could always confide in, count on for sage advice, support, and help when needed, or just a kind word to make any day better. She did love Rod Stuart! Joan was a warm, caring, and lovely lady who will be truly missed. I will keep her tucked safely in my heart.

Joe and I are so sad to hear of Joans passing. She was such a sweet person. Lots of neighborhood memories. May God hold you all close during this difficult time.

Farewell my little sister.

While you have ascended to a higher place, I will still have so many great memories of days gone. Memories that will soften my sorrow and strengthen my resolve to live a life as a caring person, continued good character and compassion for those less fortunate as you and me.
