Joe Maggio Obituary

Joe Maggio

BOSSIER CITY, LA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Joe Maggio will be 1 p.m. Monday, January 25, 2016 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father Charles Glorioso, assisted by Monsignor Carson LaCaze and Father Karl Daigle. Interment will be at Forest Park Cemetery on St. Vincent Ave. in Shreveport. Visitation will be Sunday, January 24, 2016 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City.

Joe was born May 19, 1924 and passed away January 21, 2016. Joe was the second son born to Sam and Mary Maggio. The three Maggio brothers were born and raised in Bossier City. His oldest brother, Vince and wife, Mary lived in Haughton.

Joe and his younger brother, Charlie were business partners, running the family grocery, Maggio Brothers. They also shared the work on their rent houses, many of which were built by their father, Sam Maggio. Some of their best times were spent working on their land in Bodcau, Rocky Mount and Ivan. He loved the beauty of the outdoors and enjoyed riding around his land as often as he could.

Joe Maggio was a great friend to many people and was known by all as "Uncle Joe". He was most proud of his football years at Bossier High School, where he was known as the "Scatback". The 1942 championship team at BHS still holds the undefeated record. These memories were re-lived with friends and family in Maggio Grocery through the years.

Joe credited his confidence in life to his beloved wife, Grace Maggio. He'd say "She's one in a million". He loved his family and was very proud of his son, Sam and grandson, Joey. He will be greatly missed in the Bossier community that he loved so much.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Mary Maggio; the love of his life, wife, Grace Tucker Maggio; brothers, Vince Maggio and wife, Mary and Charles Maggio and wife, Sara; great niece, Melissa Rose Maggio and great nephew, Chas Maggio.

He is survived by his son, Sam Maggio IV and wife, Jackie of Benton; grandchildren, Joey Maggio and wife, Becky, Amanda Coker King and husband, Brady and Ashley Coker. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Sam Maggio and wife, Joy, Maria Rosalee and husband, Charles, Dottie Mitcham and husband, Butch, Joe Maggio and wife, Lisa, Sam Maggio III and wife, Theresa, Vince Maggio and wife, Sharon, Mary Maggio, Joe Maggio and wife, Patsy, Betty Charchio and husband, Sonny, Don Maggio and wife, Billie and a host of other family and friends.

Honoring Joe as pallbearers are, Judge Ford Stinson, Foster Campbell, David Montgomery, Judge Henry Brown, Bobby Edmiston, Judge Tommy Wilson, John "Tuttie" Bundy, and Sam Pullig.

Honorary pallbearers are, Sheriff Julian Whittington, Judge Billy Ross Robinson, Kenny Viola, Jim Viola, Dink DeHaberman, Dr. Carter Boyd, Weldon Brooks, Bobby Lewis, Tony Montalbano, George Chambers, Adam Hollenshead, Jim Whitman, Gary Landers, Judge Jeff Cox, Judge Cecil Campbell and Jess Tubbs.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Carter Boyd, Promise Hospital in Bossier, Pathway Rehab Hospital, and the Grace Home for their excellent care and compassion.

The family suggests memorials to Christ the King Catholic Church, 425 McCormick St., Bossier City, LA 71111 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

I will miss visiting Uncle Joe at the store . He would often comment how much he loved his wife and would reach for his shirt pocket and show me her plcture . If I heard their story once I heard it a thousand times and amazingly I never got tired of hearing it and always had questions about her . My son Blake would run into Uncle Joe at different outings and Uncle Joe took a liking to him . He would always ask me about Blake and tell me how impressed he was with him and Blake tells me how much he enjoyed their visits . We will miss him dearly and consider ourselves very blessed to have known him .. RIP Uncle Joe ,,,

I was lucky to have known Joe Maggio, from the time I was in elementary school until just a few months ago, and he was just one of those great guys that always had something cleaver to say, I'll always remember him always giving me good advice in my teenage years and how involved he was with me in raising pigeons. I can tell you a lot of great stories about Joe Maggio, but that would take a few years. I'll be sad knowing that Joe has left us, but I'll always great memories of him. God Bless you Mr. Maggio, and your family, and thank you for being a dear friend to me over the years.
