Joe Vasquez Obituary

Joe D. Vasquez affectionately known as "Lolo" entered into eternal peace with the Lord April 24, 2012. Lolo was born in Pueblo, Colorado April 1, 1936. He was co-owner, along with his beloved wife of 53 years, Marge Vasquez, of the Bean Bandit Mexican restaurant for the past 46 years where his two sons, Derek and Darin eventually joined them. Lolo leaves behind his loving wife Marge, his cherished sons Derek (Tami) and Darin (Vikki) as well as his precious grandson's: Chance, Chadd, Cobie, Caleb, and baby Collin. He is also survived by three brothers, his very close family-in-laws: Art (Joyce) Manzanares, Edith (Frank) Castro and JoAnn Hernandez in addition to many loved nieces and nephews. He also leaves many friends, loyal patrons and valued staff. Lolo was preceded in death by his beloved grandson Joey Michael Vasquez and his much loved and spoiled pet Papas, as well as his parents, two sisters, two brothers, and his father, mother-in-laws and a brother-in-law. Lolo was a dedicated supporter for many years to both Divine Redeemer and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Lolo was an inventor and designer. He took great pride in designing their three restaurants as well as all of his own equipment. He has left many treasured memories of the unique talents he possessed. We know that he is at peace with our heavenly father and one day we will join him. Prayer service for Lolo will be Friday, April 27, 2012 at 7:00pm, Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 11:00am. Both services will be held at Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, 1520 E. Yampa Street. Per Lolo's request no public viewing will be held. As per Lolo's request, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pikes Peak Hospice or Divine Redeemer Catholic Church.

Margie and family,

In 1973, when I returned to Colorado Springs, my home town, from where I'd graduated from Divine Redeemer and St. Mary's High School, and living there briefly on Dale Street and working at St. Francis Hospital, my girl friend and I made El Burrito a regular visit on Friday evenings. I had convinced her that we should make authentic "Mexican" food part of every week and what we found in El Burrito was just the very best of it. I've never had better. The chiles rellenos and the sopaipillas were amazing, and I remember thinking often of how much love and caring must have gone into every aspect of what you two did. You were personally wonderful to the two of us and that pervaded everything about El Burrito. From the doorway dominated by "el burro" into the cozy dining area, El Burrito is one of the fondest memories I have of those bygone, and much simpler, times, when Colorado Springs still had a bit of the "Old West" left in it. Thanks, Lolo! I will never forget you or your work, amigo, and thank you, Margie, for helping make Lolo's dreams a reality, in which only the most fortunate shared, giving him a loving family and representing the highest standard of the practice of godly hospitality!

With love and respect,

John Braund

Auntie Margie and cousins, Derek and Darin, my heart and prayers go out to you at this time in Uncle Lolo's passing. I know it is a time of sadness and a time to know uncle was called home to be with the Lord. Having gone through this with my dad just last year, I know how you are feeling now. Uncle was such a good man and so creative and talented in things he made and did. He was also great at telling jokes and making people laugh.
I loved hearing the stories him and my dad shared with me on some of their childhood adventures they did together growing up. I think of those moments and I can still remember seeing their faces and laughing together, when they were telling their stories. Precious moments I cherish and now they are on a new adventure together again in heaven.
We wish we could be there with you at this time but please know, we have you in our thoughts and prayers and send our love your way across the miles.

The values and principles I learned from him will live forever and I only hope I am able to pass them on to others as unselfishly as he did to so many. He is in a better place now as his work on earth is done. Where he is at there is no sickness, sorrow, or pain.

Oh Marge, this is sad news. I'm now thinking of you both and our first meeting, your first restaurant on Platte. Next it was over to Boulder St., where Lolo turned a warehouse into a really neat restaurant. Remembering he always wanted a fountain in the dining room, so he made one using a galvanized watering trough...which always needed painting! Then, after some name changes, the Bean Bandit emerged, remaining as a great reminder of Lolo's dreams and your many successes together.

Thinking of you and the boys along with some great memories of times gone by.

He cared so much for everyone whom entered his place of business. I am so sorry I am unable to be with you at this time, Just know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Lolo is in a better place now and know that he is looking down on you and watching and caring for you always.
My heart goes out to you at this time and in the days ahead.

But he is with the Lord now and all pain and sickness is gone. I can picture him running the restaurants from above.
