Joel L. Taylor Obituary

Joel Taylor of Colorado Springs died November 20th, 2013 at the age of 82. Preceded in death by his parents Russell and Goldie Taylor of Denver. He is survived by a devoted son Tyson (Ty) of Colorado Springs, a son Kent (Kim) of Whitefish, MT, a daughter Tracy (Greg) Guerrero of Seattle, WA, three grandchildren, a sister Nancy (Glenn) Wearner of Westminster, Co and two nephews and their families Brian (Heather) Wearner of Westminster, Co and Trent (Robyn) Wearner of Centennial, Co.

He graduated from Denver East High School where he was on the golf team and accepted a golf scholarship to Denver University. While attending DU he played in many league and NCAA tournaments. He graduated from DU with a law degree, but never practiced law and decided to focus on playing professional golf shortly after graduation.

He was a life member of the PGA starting in 1968 and his golf career led him in many directions. He served as an assistant pro at Park Hill Golf Course in Denver, a head pro at Sunset Golf Club in Longmont, as well as professional positions at Mission Hill Country Club in Kansas City, The Broadmoor and Pine Creek in Colorado Springs. He played the PGA tour in the 1950s and early 60s and played in four major tournaments. One PGA Championship in 1970,one Senior Open in l987 and two Senior PGA Championships in 1986 and l989. In 1997 he opened the driving range at Patty Jewett and established Big Possum Golf Inc.

He spent his retirement years playing golf, traveling, bird-watching, studying the calls of birds, and working on his many art projects. His stories are of legend mostly because he was laughing hysterically before he could even begin to get them out. Everyone has a Joel story and everyone he knew received a piece of art from his alter ego, Joel..

He had a great sense of humor, wit, loved to laugh, and a good joke made his eyes shine. He enjoyed listening to Andre Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra. He will be greatly missed by family and friends that he so enjoyed throughout the years.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to The First Tee of Pikes Peak would be appreciated. Make Checks to The First Tee of Pikes Peak, 525 N Academy Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO 80909.

Ty, Bill and I were so sorry to hear about your dad. I can still remember him asking me to teach you to swim 40+ years ago. What a character! He will be missed. And I never turned down a chance to play a round of golf with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Leslie and Bill Pfalmer

There are too many recollections from 70 years of association w/this character to relate - he was a unique friend, frat brother, golf coach, story teller...always good for a laugh, fun to talk w/in person or from a thousand miles away. Will miss him big time.

What a dynamic person. He was one of the 'cool parents' when we were teenagers. Joel will be missed by everyone who knew him. Anything you need, Ty; you know where we are.
