John Gutierrez Obituary

John Gutierrez age 91, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs passed away on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 in Huntsville, Alabama. He was retired after 40 years in the Indiana Steel Worker's Union. John was born on March 8, 1918 in Jalisco, Mexico to the late Silvino and Carmen Gutierrez. He was drafted into the United States Navy and served in World War II on the U.S.S. TOMBIGBEE AOG-11. He was married to Shirley Barbara Bitterman. After his retirement, John and Shirley owned and operated the Gutierrez Lounge and John & Shirley's Cantina in East Chicago, Indiana. John enjoyed bingo, reading, pool and playing cards. He liked to watch Mexican soap operas and game shows. He will best be remembered for his kindness, gentleness, warmth and outgoing personality. Mr. Gutierrez is survived by his sons: Antonio (wife, Leona) Gutierrez of Indiana, Johnny (wife, Eileen) Gutierrez of Indiana; Jesse (wife, Dr. Maria) Gutierrez of Madison, Alabama and Joseph Gutierrez of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by his grandchildren Marisha, Antonio Jr., Michael, Samantha, Johnny Jr., Andrea, Virgil, Rachel Cantrell and Nicole McNeiley. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Shirley, his son Jerome and his brother Joe. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, December 11, 2009 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Committal Services with Military Honors will follow at the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum, Columbarium of Faith. Memorials may be made in his memory to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
