John Hellem Obituary

John was born in Decorah, Iowa on May 24, 1928 to Emil August Hellem & Ella Young Hellem. John’s father came to the United States from Norway, his mother was born in Hesper, Iowa. John attended school in Burr Oak, Iowa, He then served 5 years in the US Army on Guam during the Korean War, serving at Fort Hood from September 1948 - June 1952. John married Elaine Virginia Linde on April 17, 1954 in Lodi, Wisconsin after being honorably discharged from the Army. The marriage of John & Elaine produced three children, Diana (Hellem) & Frank Sizemore(daughter & son-in law)) of Rangely, Colorado; Stewart Hellem & Jill (Jensen) (son & daughter- in -law) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Sam & Loren , grandsons; Greg Hellem & Terrie (Greco), (son & daughter- in- law) and Gregory & Michael, grandsons. John was preceded in death by James Hellem (brother) of Burr Oak, Iowa, Eugene Hellem (brother) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Milford Hellem (brother) of Madison, Wisconsin, Gladys (sister) of Harmony, Minnesota, Emelia (sister) of Sauk City, Wisconsin and Helen (sister) of Middletown, Ohio. John is survived by two sisters, Charlotte Nelson of Rockford, Illinois and Emma Avery of Preston, Minnesota. John was a member of the Carpenters Local 515 Union in both Colorado & the union in Wisconsin for 50 years. During this time he built homes for the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright which included the House on the Rock & two others, as well as homes for three prominent Green Bay Packer’s Bart Star, Elijah Pitts & Ray Nitzke. He was also a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church for 39 years as well as the Sons of Norway, Sertoma Club and was the business owner of El Manitou Lodge of Manitou Springs, Colorado for 9 years. John will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Services will be held Friday April 17, 2009 at 11:00 am at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2505 N. Circle Dr. Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909 with Luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Pikes Peak Hospice in memory of John O. Hellem.
