John LeFevre Obituary

JOHN FREDERICK LEFEVRE
January 16, 1942 December 19, 2020
John Frederick LeFevre, age 78, died on Saturday, December 19, 2020, in Colorado Springs, CO. He was born in Troy, Ohio, on January 16, 1942, to Virginia Forward LeFevre and Frederick Campbell LeFevre.
John studied piano from an early age, and it was the beginning of his lifelong love of Music. When he entered high school, his parents became interested in figure skating as a result of the newly constructed Hobart Arena in Troy. John skated briefly until leaving for Williams College in 1960. After graduating from Williams in 1964, he enrolled in George Washington School of law, in Washington, D.C. He completed his studies, earning his J.D. in 1967. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1967, attended Officers Candidate School, and served on the U. S. Guam during the Vietnam War. After serving for four years, he returned to Washington D.C. where he passed the bar, and began a 36 year career at the Federal Trade Commission.
Throughout his life, John's primary interests were music and figure skating. He sang in various church choirs and choral groups, both in Washington and Colorado. Inspired by his parents, John pursued his love of figure skating, ultimately reaching world and Olympic level judge, He was the president of the Washington Figure Skating Club, and later, after retiring from the Federal Trade Commission, he was asked to be the executive director of U.S. Figure Skating, and moved to Colorado Springs in 1998. After retiring from U.S. Figure Skating, he became president of the Broadmoor Skating Club.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda J. LeFevre, and daughter Sarah P. LeFevre.
We hope John's friends remember him for his bawdy humor, boisterous nature, and his kind, loving spirit. He will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the music department of the National Presbyterian Church, 4101 Nebraska Avenue NW, Washington D.C. 20016.

JEAN NOONAN

I met John when we began working together at the Federal Trade Commission in 1977. I quickly learned that John not only was a talented lawyer and leader, but also possessed a fascinating backstory in his other life as a figure skater and judge of national and international competitions. Every time there was a major televised skating competition that John did not attend, we gathered in his office to beg for personal insights of and gossip about our favorite skaters - which John shared with great good humor.
After Sarah joined the LeFevre household, all John's work friends celebrated her arrival at a party in my small townhouse, with Sarah sleeping soundly through the lively party downstairs, while one colleague kept watch over her. John so loved having a daughter, and especially Sarah, who shared his love of music and has made it a central part of her life.
After we no longer worked together we kept in touch. After John and Linda left the DC area for Colorado, we usually had dinner together when they returned to visit friends. I last saw John a few years ago when John and Linda invited me to New Year's Eve dinner at their beachfront condo in Florida. I was on a stopover on my drive from DC to Key West with my two small dogs. Despite the condo's no-pets policy, John met me at my car armed with beach towels and used them to help us smuggle the puppies up into the condo and party. This memory of John always makes me smile - he was just as I always experienced him - generous, clever, and delightful, if sometimes a bit naughty. Linda and Sarah, my heart breaks for you. And John, thank you for enriching the lives of so many friends while we had you.

John was one of my first supervisors at the Federal Trade Commission. He was a fantastic mentor -- smart, encouraging, honest and patient. He helped me understand how things were done -- the unofficial version. He had a joyful spirit and a wonderful sense of humor. My condolences to his family and friends. He had an immense positive impact on many lives.

Dear Linda and Sarah,

I am thinking of you during this difficult time. I adored John and cherish the many family memories we all created together. I vividly remember us sharing so much family laughter as well as deep discussions about pretty much any topic! Sitting at your house in McLean, John guided me through my angst over leaving skating and what would come next for me. The warmth, encouragement and genuine interest in who I wanted to become as a young person will remain in my heart forever. I hope you and Sarah can find some comfort with family and close friends during these times. You are being thought of in the Silby-Hinz household. XO
