John Leonhart Obituary

John Allen Leonhart, 70, of Yoder Colorado passed away at his home in Yoder on June 29, 2015. John was born in Beloit, Kansas on November 21, 1944 to Bill and Colene Leonhart and was raised in Hunter, Kansas where he developed his love and appreciation of John Deere tractors, farming, and working the good rich soil of Kansas. John is survived by Judy, his wife of 22 years, and his children, Steve (wife, Mandy) Greg, and Adam (wife, Karen), and his brother Art (wife, Jane). John is also survived by his grandchildren, Christopher, Timothy, Leslie, Kimberly, Brianna, and Alexander, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by 3 children, 5 grandchildren, 3 brothers, 3 sisters and his mom and dad.

John attended college at Ft. Hays State in Hays, Kansas, or as he liked to say, "Hays, America". He majored in Physics and enjoyed learning. John obtained his surveying license and worked as a Land Surveyor for over 35 years. John enjoyed the challenges involved in surveying but he also talked about his experiences working on the Wendell Watson farm as a young man, working as a manager at the Hays Theater, working to build roads throughout Kansas, and working with Bill Harger laying curb and gutter. John enjoyed working hard and looked back with pride at his many accomplishments. John looked forward to Tuesday nights which is when he played pool with a group of men he had known for over 30 years. He loved to play pool. John also loved John Deere tractors and he spent years scouring the countryside looking for more tractors to admire and/or acquire.

John embraced life and lived it to the fullest. He loved people and was happiest when he was making a new acquaintance or talking to an old friend. John was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandpa, uncle, brother, and friend. He will be greatly missed. John fought with cancer and although he did not prevail, he faced death with dignity and bravery. He maintained his cheerful disposition and was quick with a smile to the very end.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate the life of John Allen Leonhart, on Saturday, July 11th at 11:00 AM, Swan-Law Funeral Directors - 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs. Lunch will be provided following the service. The burial will be a private family gathering.

I am saddened to learn that my college friend has passed on. He and I enjoyed our high performance cars and worked for the same gas-station owner at 27th & Vine in Hays, Ks. John and I lost touch after he graduated from Fort Hays Kansas State College and moved to Colorado...it is pleasing to learn he had such a rewarding and happy family life. I have always dreamed of finding him and rekindling our friendship.
Rest well, my dear friend...you are remembered fondly!

I'd like to express my most heartfelt condolences to John's entire family. John was a great neighbor; always willing to lend a helping hand as well as being the neighborhood watch dog. After moving to Alaska, I thoroughly enjoyed the conversations we shared pertaining to the Northern Lights, Mt. McKinley, plate tectonics, volcanoes, earth quakes, etc., etc. I will miss those conversations - whether by phone 3,200 miles away, or in person leaning up against a fence post. Goodbye John and God bless!
