John Jack Andrew Lyons

John Lyons Obituary

March 18, 1926 - February 6, 2009 It is impossible to describe a man who let his quiet strength and gentle wisdom guide his family through turmoil and triumphs. Jack lived most of his life, as he says, "Surrounded by girls". He was the ultimate family man. He was an adoring husband, a playful and wise father, a strong and funny grandfather, and a supportive friend. He always knew just what to say to put things into perspective, and to make situations better. He also knew when few words and a quiet hug would accomplish more than a long speech or sermon. Jack's quick wit and dry sense of humor kept those around him realizing that laughter is often the best medicine. He taught four daughters how to love, appreciate and play nearly every sport imaginable. He taught us girls that hard work and effort made us winners every time. Jack shared that love and wisdom with five grandchildren as well. Often worn out from his long days at two jobs, Jack was never too tired to spend time with his girls and grandchildren. He played unending games of baseball, kickball, football, soccer, and basketball; not to mention reading books and stories, coloring pictures, building LEGO castles, and stringing endless sets of Mardi Gras beads! One thing we know for certain, Jack was a man who was always there: with a word of encouragement, a joke or one-liner, a handkerchief to dry a tear, and always, big strong arms to embrace us in a great bear hug! Jack was born on March 18, 1926 to William and Nora Lyons. He had an older brother, Jim, and two older sisters, Betty and DD, who preceded him in death. He lived his entire life in Colorado Springs, graduating from Colorado Springs High School in 1944. On July 30, 1949, Jack married the love of his life, Dorothy Campbell, also a Colorado Springs native. She left us in December 2003. Together they raised four daughters, who survive. Because of the abundant love and closeness in the Lyons family, all four daughters remained in Colorado Springs to share in the joys of such a loving home. Gatherings at Jack and Dorothy's home included Jan Lyons-Lamb and her children Jim, Jason and Jessi; Becky and her beloved Boston Terriers; Patti Gasco and her two children, Ben and Amanda; and Julie Lyons-Careaga and her husband, John. Dorothy and Jack made their home a love-filled haven for all who visited. Jack worked many jobs in his teen years into early adulthood, from grocery clerk to cab driver. As he settled into family life, he also settled into his job with the U.S. Postal Service for thirty-eight years, until his retirement in 1989. After Jack and Dorothy retired, they enjoyed many travels and vacations throughout the United States and within our wonderful state of Colorado. Jack played in organized softball leagues throughout much of his adult life. His games and tournaments took the family on many adventures across the state. By far, Jack's greatest joy was his family. Fortunately, close family ties were a given in the Lyons home, and Jack was surrounded by his girls and grandchildren until a weakening heart took him from us on February 6, 2009. To us, he will always be that gentle giant whose hugs could calm any fears, whose words could quiet all apprehensions, and whose wit could turn sadness and despair into hope. To four daughters and five grandchildren, he was our hero and role model. We hold him forever in our hearts with undying love, eternal gratitude, and continual appreciation. He will forever be our guiding light. A memorial service will be held on February 13, 2009, at 2:30 p.m., at Swan-Law Cascade Chapel. Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, or to the charity of your choice.

Grandpa, I spent more time with you in the last three months than in the last three years. I learned alot. One of the most important lessons I learned was love never dies. After five years of missing Grandma, you loved her just as much now as the day she left us. I can only pray to have such a devoted husband, friend and father to my children as what you proved you were to Grandma. God bless you both and I'm so glad you two are reunited! Love you both so much, Jessi Lynn

I send my deepest sympathies and prayers to my cousins Jan, Becky, Patti and Julie Kay. May you continue your father's legacy of kindness, strength and love of life. It was an honor and a privilege to be his niece and a part of his extended family. His life was a real home run. Now God's team has a new star player!

Lyons Girls and Families.
What a special tribute to a special man.
Remembering this man and his family in years gone by. I was a young girl who lived next to the grocery store that the Lyons family had. I started working for Mr Lyons at age 11, stocking shelves. Your dad was in the military and they were so proud of him.
As I grew up, your dad was our postman for many many years. I remember how proud he and your mother were of their girls. They instilled such great values in you all.
Please know we are praying for you during these times. So sorry for your loss.
Death leaves a heartache, only God
can heal.
Love leaves us memories, no one can steal.

Extend my sympathy to each family member. You will certainly miss Jack's presence, however, memories will help carry you through this sad time.
Always enjoyed the Christmas cards and greetings sent by the girls.
Richard often spoke of memories when the family owned a grocery on Hancock and homemade fudge.
God Bless
