John Maytag Obituary

John Robert "Bob" Maytag, 85, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2017 in Colorado Springs. Bob was born in Chicago on May 4, 1931 to Joe Speary and Freda L. Maytag.

He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret R. Maytag; children: Teresa (Philip) Yannias, Russell (Sherry) Maytag, Karen (Mike) Lococo, Robert Maytag Anibarro and Alexia Maytag Anibarro; stepchildren: Matthew Lowe, Lisa Lowe and Deann Koehler; grandchildren: Samantha Armstrong, Robert Lococo, Katheryne Yannias, Nicholas Lococo, Zachary Yannias and Joseph Lococo; and Carole Maytag, his loving friend. He was preceded in death by his mother, Freda Maytag; father, Joe Speary; and sister, Ann Louise Maytag.

Bob was a lifelong resident of Colorado Springs and graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1949, going on to Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa to receive his BA.

Bob was a rancher, businessman, politician and philanthropist. Bob was involved in local and national Democratic politics. He served as Mayor of Woodland Park in the early 1960's. He then became Colorado Democratic Party State Chairman, member of The Democratic National Committee and attended two Presidential Conventions. Bob was a member of the Board of Trustees for Colorado School of Mines 1975-78 and President of Colorado School of Mines Foundation Board of Directors 1976-78.

Bob had numerous interests. His passion for running began in his 50th year by running his first marathon, which led to 95 marathons around the world. He was a skilled skier and pilot, flying his own planes.

Bob was a generous man to many in need. He was a very humble, selfless, and a big-hearted man. Bob lived life to the fullest and was an inspiration to all he touched.

The family would like to thank Connie Hagins, Bob's caregiver, for her love and dedication to Bob. Also Suncrest Hospice and Morningstar caregivers.

There will be a memorial service Thursday, February 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 East Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs.

As much as Bob loved running, he loved the land. While he was running he always took time to pick up litter. Cheyenne Mountain thanks you, and will
miss you.
