John P. "Jack" Moore Jr.

John Moore Obituary

John P. "Jack" Moore died September 7 after a brief illness. Jack grew up in a large family on a dairy farm in rural western Massachusetts. His parents ran the farm as well as taught school. Jack made a 30-year career with the U.S. Army starting as an infantry rifleman and working his way up to CWO-4 in the Air Defense Artillery. Jack was an early advocate of computers for missile guidance control and helped with missile system development during the Cold War. He and his family moved across the U.S. and Germany during his Army assignments. However, he spoke most fondly of his assignments to NORAD in "this really nice small town of Colorado Springs, Colorado". Jack wrangled his final assignment to the "Springs" and retired here. After retiring from the Army, he worked as Director of Information Systems at Ft. Carson. He was instrumental in many of the modern computer, communications and facilities upgrades that the base currently enjoys. He felt a tremendous sense of accomplishment in taking their IT systems into the 21st century with state-of-the-art technology in Project "Viable". When Jack "really retired" he volunteered for the City Greenhouse and Nursery and the City East Library. He was proud of Colorado Spring's well deserved reputation for premier city landscaping and library programs. He helped raise matching money for the City Greenhouse reconstruction. He was adamant that the City Greenhouse, which was donated to the city by General William J. Palmer at the turn of the last century, was integral to the city's civility and quality of life. He tirelessly defended the greenhouse and nursery against closure and budget cuts. Jack was extremely well read and felt reading and education to be the cornerstone to success and the American Dream. He volunteered at the City East Library for many years and received the Gold Level, President's Call to Service Award, from President Bush for his work. The real story is that it gave him direct access to the books he so loved and enjoyed. Jack was known for his tremendous work ethic, devotion to duty and unyielding integrity.

I well remember Jack from high school in Brimfield MA. Although he was a year ahead of us, we (Jack, Peter my future husband and I)shared classes and in particular one study hall where Jack would get a few sitting near him involved in discussions re writing and literature. We shared many laughs together, along with classmates;he had a great sense of humor. At that time his dream was to become a newspaper journalist. I regret that I did not get an opportunity to speak with him at a high school reunion in May.

Our sympathy to his family.

Jack Moore, Mentor

I watched him pour over blue prints and construction of the DOIM building. His plans and empire were state of the art. He had tirades, but allowed you a knowing look into his eyes, a share of the resource he managed. VIABLE was his first project, but not the last by a far shot. Jack’s dreams became other people’s promotion ladders - mine too. He was the right man, place, and time. I never worked for him, but wished I had. I will miss the visits with him at the library, stories about his flowers and CU. He said to me, never worry.

My best wishes to sons, wife and happiness.

Our deepest sypathies are with the family at this time. I remember our many days and nights at NORAD, working on the Safeguard System only to be told to cut the cables. Jack always had a positive attitude and was a good friend. He will be missed but its nice to know we will see him again someday. Phil

Family of Jack,

My Condolences to you all. I knew Jack at Fort Carson when I was still in uniform working in the 4th Division Signal Office. He was a great person, techicain and quite frankly a friend/professonal mentor who shared the desire to do things that needed to be done and get done things right (overcoming persistent senior grade stupidity). I did not know until today or else I would have been there last night and today.

Jack: Sweet Dreams you great old fart!
