John Paolino Obituary

Lt. Col. John Julian Paolino, Ret., 75, of Monument, Colorado, died unexpectedly September 10th, 2014.

He was born October 27, 1938, in Florence, Colorado to Albina (Nogavica) and John Paolino.

Upon receiving his MA from Colorado State College, Greeley, he entered the United States Air Force. In 1964 and 1965, J.J. flew more than 650 combat support sorties in Vietnam and logged more than 4,000 flying-hours during his military career. Since retiring from the Air Force in 1981, he worked at Arizona Public Service, LSI Logic and was a management consultant with numerous Fortune 500 companies. He served as an adjunct faculty member at Arizona State University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the Community Colleges of Arizona. He also served on the UNC Alumni Association Board of Directors.

J.J. is survived by his three children: Kris A. Paolino of Castle Rock, Colorado; Tish M. Paolino and Dana L. Paolino, both of Mukilteo, Washington; and five grandchildren: Caitlyn, Jake, Megan, Kade and Bret as well as numerous cousins and close relatives in and around the Canon City/Denver areas.

J.J. has close ties to the Air Force Academy where in the early '70s, he was the Director of Cadet Counseling and where currently his grandson, Cadet Wing Commander Jake Sortor, is in his 4th year. In the last four years, he has sponsored a number of cadets at his home acting as mentor, advisor and friend and was referred to as "Grandpa Jay".

J.J. was taken from us far too soon and unexpectedly. He had many long-standing, close friends throughout his lifetime, and he will be missed by so many.

A funeral mass will be held Thursday, September 18, 2014 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 55 N. Jefferson Street, Monument, CO 80132 at 10:00 am followed by a Military burial at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 W. Kenyon Avenue, Denver, CO 80236 at 1:00 pm.

I met Jay one bright day on Base and invited him to ASU where he was immediately hired as Adjunct Faculty and became a welcome addition. I will treasure my memories of this fine man. He spoke often of his beautiful family.

August 14, 2016

Jay was my boss and friend at APS. He taught me so much and kindled my passion for Organization Development, Team Building and Training. Sadly, I just learned he has passed. He was always available for a chat, advice and a job recommendation! He talked about Kris, Dana and Tish is much that we believed we knew you. Condolences to you all as the two-year anniversary is almost here. Blessings to you and yours. Karen Bower Macdonald (Glendale, AZ and now Waterford, CT).

Dear Paolino Family: Our most sincere condolences to the children and grand children of Jay. We have known Jay for over 40 years and this includes many dinners, fishing and hunting trips, and also 4 years with him at the USAFA. He had an extended family and did so many favors for the Cadets at AFA. We also knew of his outstanding work with APL and LSI Logic. He had consulting contacts all over the world. A TRUE American. Jay was a very special person and a close friend of ours. We spent many football Saturdays watching and cheering for Notre Dame. Jay took us for target practice both in AZ and CO and we spent a lot of time trying to out-cook each other. We learned how to make sausage, pasta, and great spaghetti sauce from him. But the best times were the quiet visits and the conversations. Jay could fix anything (at least we thought so) and was always the one we went to when we needed to know how something should be done. Jay's 76th birthday would be coming up next month ... Jay, we'll miss you, dear friend. Our sincerest condolences to Chris and the girls on losing your great Dad as well as to all of his relatives and friends on losing such a great person.

So many great memories - flying at Willie, deer hunting, many quail trips, trips to Notre Dame for football weekends, and many more. Most of all we remember his commitment to the Air Force and to his family, and his pride in his grandson ready to carry on his Air Force service. We will miss him.
