John Polliard Memoriam

Polliard
John "Johnny" Earl Polliard
1916 - 1968
Fifty years ago today, you were instantly taken from us while working as a high power lineman at the Air Force Academy. You often expressed the hope that you would be missed when you passed away. Rest assured, your wish has been granted--you remain alive in our hearts and our memory!
Who Was This Man?
With a heart already broken, she's old beyond her years. She's only 5 and yet she tries to fight hot, unshed tears.
With a brave little smile for her yet unknowing brother, she tries to hide the awful truth. Silently nearby, their grieving mother.
Who was this man for whom they grieve? Was he saint or millionaire? No, just a father who loved them with all his heart could share.
The night before, his children snuggled close to hear, a bedtime story as they always did, every night of the year.
And then a kiss and off to bed with hearts full of love, for a Daddy they both adored, who now watches from above.
He kissed his wife in the early morn, as he did every day before, little knowing what Fate had planned that day, as he softly shut the door.
No footsteps this night herald his approach, nor will they come anymore. Who was this man for whom they grieve, behind the unopened door...
- Jayne Vanzant Polliard (for Johnny, April 1968)

I think it's pretty great that exactly 50 years after this tragedy that left very young children without a dad, they took the time and expense here to remember and honor him.

I was just a baby and did not know this man or his family when he passed - but what a wonderful tribute to this man. May he Rest in Peace knowing he had a family so full of love.
