John Sargent Obituary

KENSINGTON -- John W. Sargent Sr., 79, died March 14, 2009, at his home.

He was born Dec. 13, 1929, in Newburyport, Mass., to Raymond W. Sargent and Geraldine Ferrin Sargent.

He lived most of his life in Kensington. His love of home and community gave him pride in helping to start the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department. He worked on many different committees and various boards. He was a selectman for the town for many years.

Throughout his life, he worked at Baker Wright in Portsmouth, and General Electric in Lynn, Mass. In later years, he could be seen working on his horses, either taking them and the kids for ice cream or working the fields to help feed themselves. As a long fulfilling life came to its end, he was surrounded by his family and friends.

IN HIS LIFE: Family includes his wife of 50 years, Mildred Sargent; son, John Sargent Jr., and wife, Stephanie; his daughters, Alicia and husband, Dwight, Marilyn and husband, Charles, and Elizabeth and wife, Cricket; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St. Exeter. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Kensington Congregational Church. David Sargent, John's nephew, will be officiating. A reception gathering will follow at the family home on 144 Amesbury Rd. in Kensington.

Spring burial will be in Village Cemetery, Kensington. Donations may be made in his memory to the Kensington Congregational Church, 128 Amesbury Rd., Kensington 03833.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Uncle John's family and we especially sent our love and support to Aunt Millie during this time of significant loss. We will always remember the special times spent with Uncle John and especially the times with him and the horses.

Our thoughts are with you all right now. I will miss Uncle John big time.
He alway had a smile and a friendly hand to hold when I need one.

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.
