John Schoolmaster Obituary

Schoolmaster
John Richard Schoolmaster
December 6, 1950
April 5, 2024

John "Schooly" Schoolmaster passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 5, 2024. John is survived by his wife of 51 years Mary Jo, sister Ann and her husband Kip, children Matthew and his wife Lucinda, Katie, and Elizabeth and her husband Jacob.
John was born to Anna May and Richard Schoolmaster in Fairport, New York. John played football for the University of Rochester and majored in history, two of his favorite subjects. He married his love, Mary Jo Bluhm, in March 1973. They moved to Colorado Springs after John was drafted into the Army and stationed at Fort Carson. John and Mary Jo built their life in Colorado Springs, where they both became teachers, grew their family, and spent time with their friends.
John took pride in his 30 year career as an educator. He touched many lives as a teacher, a Dean of Students, and a football coach. Widefield and Mesa Ridge High Schools were both very close to his heart. He loved his colleagues, students, and players.
John suffered a series of traumatic brain injuries beginning in 2004. Everyone who knew him was blown away by his determination, grit, and positive attitude as he committed to his rehabilitation therapy and overcame many physical limitations. He never gave up and worked diligently to continue doing the things he loved with his family. John was immensely proud of his children, and his desire to be present for their life accomplishments and milestones was his daily motivation.
John had patience for days and an insanely quick wit. He was kind and compassionate towards all who had the pleasure of knowing him. John never forgot a trivia fact. He cared deeply for his dogs and was a lifelong Grateful Dead fan. He loved cheering on his beloved New York Yankees, New York Giants and Denver Broncos. He was always ready to finish a day of golfing, hiking, or skiing with an ice cold beer or to place a "friendly $5" on a hand of cards or a basketball game.
John taught us all so much. He was excited to wake up every morning because, as he said, he got better looking every day. We're all a little tougher, more resilient, and a lot more full of hope after our time with him. There's nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile. We'll miss you, Schooly.
In lieu of flowers, John would like donations made to Care and Share or the Humane Society.

John/Schooly was my roommate freshman year at UR. I just recently learned of his death, and I am sorry to learn of it. I remember a lot about Schooly but mostly I remember his smile. Sorry this comment is submitted so late.

John had an immense love of sports, history, his family and students (not necessarily in that order). It's a cliche but John had a mind like a steel trap for baseball trivia and his NY teams. John teamed with Joanie Sheram to teach special needs students....both of them were taken from us too early.
There is a vacancy in our hall of heroes....Schooly is one we can't replace.

Coach Schooly, You had such an impact on me as a football player back in the early 80's at Widefield H.S. I appreciate the balance between loving me and challenging me. Thank you for being a great coach to so many. You will be missed but your legacy lives on. Respectfully, Dan Taylor
