John Martin Schreiber, age 89, of Colorado Springs passed away with family at his side on Sunday, June 4th, 2023. John was born in September of 1933, to John A. Schreiber and Molly Schreiber and grew up with his elder sister, Kathleen J. Svoboda, in Lincoln Nebraska. As a child, John enjoyed playing in the fields of Lincoln with his cousin Tommy and their friends, building models with his erector set, and playing football at Lincoln High School. In high school, John also was on the Swim, Wrestling, and Track Teams, in his words, to "mainly to get in shape for Football." As a Lincoln High School football player, John was an Associated Press All State recognized center in 1950 at just 5'9" and 147 pounds.
John later attended the University of Nebraska School of Dentistry, where he was a Center for the Nebraska Cornhusker's Junior Varsity Football Team and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. While in college, he met his wife, Helen Herrmann Schreiber. In 1956, John applied for a United States Air Force General Dentistry Internship and was one of only eight interns to be awarded this honor, allowing him to serve at William Beaumont Army Hospital. On June 10th of 1957, John graduated from Dental School receiving a Doctor of Dental Surgery as well as a Reserve Commission in the USAF Dental Corps as a First Lieutenant. After completing his internship in 1958, John received a Regular Commission and was promoted to Captain.
John and Helen were married a few years later in McCook, Nebraska in 1958. Together they lived in Montgomery, Alabama and later were stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., where they became proud parents of Lindsay Sue Schreiber (de Zubeldia). In 1960, the small family moved to Colorado Springs where John started a thriving dental practice and the couple soon welcomed daughter Cindy Schreiber (Huxley) into their family. John held prestigious positions as the president of the Colorado Springs Dental Society, as well as the president of the East Colorado Springs Rotary Club. He practiced dentistry as a competent and compassionate dentist for 45 years. In his free time, John was a beautiful mogul skier and enjoyed backpacking, camping, 4-wheel driving, bicycling, gardening, and traveling with Helen. He was thrilled to later be honored by Lincoln Highschool in their football hall of fame in 2018.
John was predeceased by his parents, John and Molly Schreiber, his daughter Lindsay, and his niece, Sally Svoboda. He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Helen, sister Kathleen Svoboda, daughter Cindy (Bruce Huxley), nephew Scott (Jan Enstrom) Svoboda, nieces Deborah Svoboda, Nancy Ledford, Barbara Svoboda (Steven), and Stacey Tittle. He is also survived by his grandchildren Miguel, Miren, and Alessandra de Zubeldia.
