John Sherman Obituary

Sherman
John Sherman
January 16, 1931
October 29, 2023

Jack Sherman, a beloved husband, Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa and proud veteran of the United States Air Force passed away on October 29, 2023, in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 92, surrounded by family. All seven of his children had been to visit him along with grandchildren and great grandchildren in the days leading up to his passing.

Jack was born on January 16, 1931, to William and Grace Sherman in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in Brooklyn and attended Brooklyn Preparatory School. It was there that he met the love of his life, his late wife Ann. Jack and Ann were married on August 1, 1953, together for 55 years leading up to her passing in 2008.

In April 1951, at the age of 20, Jack enlisted in the United States Air Force. In July of 1953, he graduated from Aviation Cadet Training at Ellington Air Force Base, Houston TX and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant with Navigator Wings. After Jack married his love Ann Helen Lawson, the Air Force took Jack and Ann to Japan, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Alabama, Indiana, Hawaii and Virginia, establishing many homes and celebrating the births of their 7 children. While serving his country, Jack earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and an MBA from Indiana University, Bloomington IN. Jack's military service also included a deployment to Vietnam in 1967 and 1968 during the TET Offensive. He was assigned to Air Commando Squadron Ben Hoa Air Force Base northeast of Saigon. He flew night missions in support of ground combat operations. The United States Air Force recognized Jack with The Distinguished Flying Cross, The Combat Medal, The Air Medal and the Expert Gunman Award.

After safely returning from Vietnam to the joy and relief of his family, he was assigned to the Pentagon. His final Air Force assignment was to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. After a little over 22 years with a young family, Jack decided to retire from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1973 in Colorado Springs, Colorado where they would make their forever home. After the Air Force Jack had a successful real estate career as an agent, a broker and as a real estate business owner.

Jack's drive and determination took him a long way in his military and business career, but his family was always his top priority. His life was devoted to his wife and raising their 7 children.
Jack loved and spent many years coaching his children and grandchildren in sports. Jack always made time and enjoyed attending many of their activities over the years.

In his retirement years he split time between Colorado Springs, Sun City, Arizona and the Lake of the Ozarks. He became a regular in spring training attending many Cactus League games watching the Royals and Rockies.

Jack is survived by his seven children, John Sherman, Bonnie Brown, Donna Jenkins, Brian Sherman, Mary Bauer, Kevin Sherman, and Kathleen Carter. 19 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ann, his sister Patricia Phillips and his first grandchild Sean Thomas Brown.

Anyone that knew Jack was instantly made to feel like family, by his heart, his amazing sense of humor, his strong faith in God and his loving kindness for everyone.
