John Smith Obituary

John Jay Smith, longtime resident of Colorado Springs, was born in Farmington Connecticut. In 1950, he joined the Air Force during the Korean War. In 1952, while stationed in Denver, he worked on weekends in Central City as a Ragtime piano player; the career of Cap'n John Smith began. He not only played in many Gay 90's Saloons out West and Alaska, but also was instrumental as a piano player to open the Golden Bee (Broadmoor). In 1968, John, and his wife Louise, began a 36 year career in the restaurant and catering business. He won several awards from Colorado Chefs De Cuisine from 1978-1983. He joined the CRA in 1969 and elected to the state board in 1981. While serving 10 years, he participated in every executive committee, including President (1989-1990). He's survived by: wife Louise; daughter Rosanna; sister Peggy Goode; and grandchildren Payton, Shane. His wisdom and sense of humor will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on 7/12/12 at Grace Episcopal Church, 601 N. Tejon. Send memorials to: American Heart Association at 1586 S. 21st St., Suite 10, COS, CO 80904.
