John Thompson Obituary

John D. Thompson, 53, born in Anchorage, Alaska on December 5, 1957 to Patricia (Pat) Thompson and the late C.A. (Tommy) Thompson, passed away at home on Thursday, October 20, 2011 following a long illness. After his father's retirement from the Marine Corps, the family moved from Vienna, VA to Colorado Springs because of John's asthma. This later led to COPD, emphysema, and most recently lung cancer. John accepted everything that came his way without complaint and greeted everyone with a smile. A master craftsman coming from a long line of carpenters, mostly cabinetmakers, including his father, grandfather and several uncles. John always worked with his hands on jobs ranging from building boats in St. Augustine, Florida to being a handyman in Colorado Springs. In 2003, John was hand-picked from more than 4000 nominees as "International Craftsman of the Year" for Handyman Connection. Due to their deep love of NASCAR Racing, John and his former wife, Tanny, opened "The Race Place" store at the Citadel Mall in 1997. Survived by his mother; sons Christopher (Erica), Centennial, CO, and Sean, Colorado Springs; sister Maureen (John) Cole, Portland, OR; brothers David, Colorado Springs, Patrick, Atlanta, TX; Rusty (Jenny) Welch, Black Forest; grandson, Christian; former wife, Tanny Thompson, Centennial, CO, and several nieces and nephews. John attended Howbert Elementary, Sacred Heart Catholic School and Coronado High School. A memorial Mass is scheduled for today, October 25, at 11:00a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. John will be inurned at St. Mary's Cathedral Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Food Pantry, 2021 W.
