Johnnie Ruth Marjorie Brown Martin, a retired school teacher, died peacefully at her home in Colorado Springs, Wednesday, 21 March 2012, surrounded by her loving husband of 62 years, Lt. Col. (US Army Ret.) Ernest V. Martin and two adoring daughters, Marjorie A. Martin of NYC and Michelle M. Martin of Centreville, VA. Her death followed a courageous 12-year battle with breast cancer and a severe stroke. She was born 2 March 1926, in Mt. Pleasant, TX. She was Valedictorian at both her graduation from Booker T. Washington High School, Mt. Pleasant, and from Prairie View A&M University (TX). She later earned a Master of Education Degree at Fayetteville State University, NC, as well as a Master in Computer Education from Lesley College, MA. An Army wife, she loved travel, including a round-the-world tour on the Concorde SST, and several voyages on the QE2. She was a Charter Member of the Colorado Springs chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She was a contract bridge enthusiast, and anything else intellectually challenging. The wake will be at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 East Fountain Blvd, Tuesday, 27 March, 4:00 PM-7:00 PM. Funeral services will be at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, 5485 Alegre Drive in Fountain on Wednesday, 28 March, 11 AM, with repast following services. There will be a private burial at Ft. Logan National Cemetery on Thursday. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the 'Ernest V. and Johnnie R. Martin Scholarship Endowment,' Prairie View A&M University.
