Jon Huntsman Obituary

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah billionaire and philanthropist Jon Huntsman Sr., who overcame poverty to become one of the state's most successful and powerful people, died Friday at age 80.

Huntsman's longtime assistant Pam Bailey said he died in Salt Lake City but she declined to name a cause of death. The Huntsman Corp., which he founded, said in a statement that Huntsman died at his home, surrounded by family.

Huntsman was the founder and longtime executive chairman of the $11 billion company that refines raw materials that go into thousands of products. He was also the father of Jon Huntsman Jr., the U.S. ambassador to Russia and former Utah governor, presidential candidate and ambassador to China and Singapore.

The elder Huntsman and his family have given away more than $1.4 billion, including donations to a Salt Lake City cancer institute that bears his name.

"Cancer is hideous and deplorable and must be conquered, and it will be, as any evil eventually is defeated," Huntsman wrote in his 2014 autobiography. He said he would see to it that the institute continues its mission "if it takes my last dollar--and I expect that will be the case."

In 1970, Huntsman founded the Huntsman Container Corp., which focused on food packaging and pioneered the clamshell container used for McDonald's Corp.'s Big Mac hamburger. He formed Huntsman Chemical Corp. in 1982 and more than a decade later, consolidated his companies as Huntsman Corp., producing materials used in a wide range of products, from textiles and paints to plastics and aviation components.

Huntsman stepped down from his role in December and his son Peter Huntsman took over as the company's leader. His father continued to serve on the company's board of director and was named chairman emeritus.

"He leaves behind a great company, but even more so, a legacy of optimism, ethical behavior and philanthropy that will serve as his greatest accomplishments," Peter Huntsman said in a statement.

After amassing his fortune, Jon Huntsman gave more than $100 million in the mid-1990s to establish a research center at the University of Utah dedicated to finding a cure for cancer through human genetics. Huntsman, who lost both his parents to cancer and fought his own battle with the disease, eventually gave more than $400 million to the Huntsman Cancer Institute and its foundation.

He also wielded his power as a billionaire benefactor to the center. After the cancer institute's director and CEO was fired in April 2017, Huntsman mounted a public campaign criticizing leaders of the university and took out full-page newspaper advertisements calling the officials "inept and uncaring." The director and CEO was reinstated a week after her firing and the school's health care leader and president stepped down.

The billionaire and his family also gave generously to Utah's homeless shelters as well as more than $50 million to the Armenian people after a 1988 earthquake in that country left thousands homeless.

He also played key roles in state and national politics.

Huntsman was a special assistant to President Richard Nixon and briefly ran his own 1988 campaign for Utah's governor.

Huntsman later served as a finance chairman for Mitt Romney's 2008 presidential bid and in 2012, worked for his son's presidential bid, giving more than $1.8 million to a super PAC supporting the younger Huntsman.

Following his son's short-lived race for the Republican nomination, Huntsman kept a toehold in Utah current affairs, occasionally offering political commentary to Utah newspapers and even expressing an interest in purchasing The Salt Lake Tribune.

His son Paul Huntsman purchased the newspaper in 2016 and named his father chairman emeritus.

In the 1980s, Huntsman explored purchasing the Tribune's competitor, the Mormon-church owned Deseret News. He met with high-level leaders with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but faith leaders did not want to pursue the offer, Huntsman wrote in his autobiography.

A committed member of the Mormon church, Huntsman served in several high-level leadership positions with the faith and had close friendships with the past five church presidents.

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement that his "legacy of faithful leadership, generosity and goodness" would be a beacon for many around the world.

Huntsman said the family was exposed to the dark side of wealth and fame in 1987, when his then-16-year-old son James Huntsman was kidnapped at knifepoint from his driveway. The teenager was forced to call his father to arrange payment of $1 million ransom. He was later rescued by FBI agents.

Huntsman was born in 1937 in Blackfoot, Idaho and later moved to California, where he met his wife Karen while in junior high there.

The couple later moved to Salt Lake City in the 1970s where they raised nine children, many of whom became involved in the family business.

Huntsman is survived by his wife and eight children. One daughter, Kathleen Ann Huntsman, died in 2010 at age 44 after struggling for years with an eating disorder.

Bailey had no immediate details on funeral plans Friday.

I never met Mr Huntsman. I do know that he was a kind and generous man. After his passing, I wanted to know more about his life, and so I read his memoir, Barefoot to Billionaire. When he left this planet. the world lost a good and decent man. My sincere sympathy to his family.

Very few people have been as sharing and caring as Huntsman has. A persons life is defined by how he lived and what he gave to others. He therefore was a great man

Dear Huntsman Family,

I was very sad to hear of your loss. I use to buy from Huntsman Chemical Corp and feel like I know all of you because of the beautiful Christmas cards I received every year with a picture of the entire family. I looked forward to getting the beautiful cards along with my colleagues at Christmas time every year. I still have every one of them. I hope and pray you will all find peace knowing all the wonderful things Jon did to help so many people leaving you with such beautiful memories. GOD Bless the Huntsman Family. Sincerely

Fortunately, I have yet to personally experience the great work of this man and his family at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, but others I know have and this is the place I would want to be if I had the misfortune of dealing with cancer myself. I am in awe of people who have the fortitude to not only rise, but excel and bless the world with their accomplishments as Mr Huntsman did; he will be sorely missed, never forgotten, and will continue to bless through his legacy. How grateful we are! My sincere condolences to his family for their loss. May he now rest in peace, as he has earned it!

My heart and prayers go out to the Huntsman Family for the loss of this gentle giant of a man. He truly gave all in the service of his fellow man. He blessed many lives and will continue to bless many lives for years to come with his generosity and his commitment to the fight of cancer. His dedication to this mission saved my sister's life when she was admitted to Huntsman Cancer Hospital in 2004, five weeks after it's opening. Our story is one of many and we will be forever grateful. We know our lives are just a drop in the ocean of the lives that this man touched. God bless Jon, Sr. and may God continue to bless and watch over his family until you are all reunited. Families are Forever.

To the Jon Huntsman Family - Our relationship with Jon and Karen spans a lifetime. My dear wife Nan was a college friend of Jaren's and we knew many of the children as the were in Middle and High Schools together. Jon and I had a number of business and community contacts and as a Member of the University of Utah Board of Trustees I was privileged to offer the motion to name the arena as the Jon Huntsman Center The Motion was unanimous indicating the high level of support, respect and gratitude of the Trustees and the University. We shared a special love for Kathleen and now that the reunion of Jon and Karen is a special one for both. God bless his memory and God give solace to his family. May his memory be eternal. Thank god for Jon Huntsman and his wife Karen for all the good they have accomplished as a couple. The posterity of there family and loved ones is by far the biggest and precious of all. What a marvelous accomplishment of a great couple in starting a eternal family and watching and witnessing the joy of and heart ache of family life.
I was fortunate to be able to be around President Huntsman and his sweet wife in my days as a missionary in Washington D.C.
As I served as a missionary , Both Jon and Karen where very great examples to all the missionaries ,they showed Christ like love and devotion to all they came in contact with.
WHAT CAN I SAY, BUT THANK MY HEAVENLY FATHER FOR LETTING ME SERVE AS A MISSIONARY IN WASHINGTON D.C.
UNDER THE DIRECTION OF SUCH A GREAT AND INFLUENGAL
LEADER A MAN AS JON HUNTSMAN.

The highest honor of my career was in 2011 when Chairman Jon M. Huntsman invited me to return to Huntsman Cancer Institute/Foundation as its Chief Development Officer. To sit across the desk of this powerful, yet humble man, and hear him say to me that it would be an honor and would be like I was coming home, was such a balm to my soul and stays with me to this day, tucked away in my heart.

Mr. Huntsman, Karen and family chose to create the life-changing/life-saving Huntsman Cancer Institute when many thought it wasnt possible. That is the true measure of greatness and I was privileged to have been part of that for 9 years.

Jon was my mission president in 1982-83. One of the great blessings of my life was to work in the mission office where I was able to get to know the Huntsman family in a way that most missionaries couldn't. Aside from my own father, I can't think of any man who has had greater impact on my life. As a young missionary, it was clear to me that integrity was fundamental to everything he did. He taught us to level with others, to seek respect over popularity, to recognize the difference between love and like, to avoid re-inventing the wheel, to understand the power of simplicity and consistency. I remember disappointing him once, and vowing never to do it again. He was quick to forgive, reminding us that "pencils have erasers," and telling us that the way a person deals with failure reveals more about them than their successes. I remember feeling like I could run through brick walls when he put his arm on my shoulder and told me what he needed me to do. As much as he accomplished in his remarkable life, I believe his influence will only increase with time. I have nothing but love and respect for Jon, and my thoughts are with Karen and the entire Huntsman family as they face the challenges ahead.

Dear Peter, Jennifer, James and Family,

We wish to express our deepest condolences. Jon was an exemplary and honorable man and the best example of the LDS culture and Church. He has been one of my heroes in ingenuity, business, and philanthropy. Before I met some of your family, I was impressed with and followed Jon. Once I had the honor of meeting many of you in The Woodlands and him personally, I became more impressed. Our world has lost one of its all time best. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of loss.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I worked for Huntsman Chemical in Chesapeake Virginia and to this day all that worked there have said what a great place it was and I truly believe it is because of how Jon let us do the job and how he cared for us. I received a letter from Jon years ago for some emergency response work I did for a fellow employee that I have to this day. Never met a man who could meet you one year and three years later come up to you and call you by name and shake your hand and ask how you were and your family. He truly was a shining example of how we should treat each other in this world. I will always smile when Jon and your family are mentioned. Blesssings to all of the family.

Such a humble and down to earth man if you didn't know who he was which I didn't at first. I was from Santa Cruz California and all the missionaries from Utah certainly did. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Jon Huntsman, Sr. It was decades ago when I turned on the TV and he was on a classroom teaching, "So you want to become a writer," where a panel of well-knowns were there to share their struggles in their adversities to fulfill their dreams come true, and Mr. Huntsman spoke of his beginnings, telling of how he grew into a millionaire, at the time.
My own dream was to become a published writer, so I wrote to him, and he sent me his book of inspiration, tells of trust and "a handshake to seal the deal." We corresponded back and forth a couple times, but after that I became affiliated with his Huntsman Cancer Hospital in Salt Lake, Utah. All in all, he was the best inspiration I had in my early life as a writer; now I have six books published. I have thought of him often, proud to have learned of him and his touching accomplishments. Rest in Peace, Jon Huntsman--I honor you!

Over the years I have watched the Huntsman family make service and charity work as the main focus of their lives. We should all be inspired by there great examples.
