Joseph Bunting Obituary

Jul. 1, 1919-Mar. 19, 2006. Joseph H. Bunting, 86, of Colorado Springs, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2006. Joseph was born in St. Louis, MO, July 1, 1919, to Joseph and Ethel (St. Peters) Bunting. He has been a resident of Colorado Springs since August, 2004. During the Second World War, Joseph served his country as a Master Sergeant in the Army Air Corps, European Theater. He was awarded six bronze stars for meritorious service. Joseph worked for the St. Louis Southwestern Railway Company for 47 years. After his retirement, he completed his B.A. in history from Washington University in St. Louis. A lifelong Presbyterian, Joseph served his church community as deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, superintendent of Sunday school, church planter, and church treasurer. His faith and his family were his life's priorities and joys. He served them both selflessly. In 1941, just days after Pearl Harbor, he married the love of his life, Virginia P. Lee. Some months later, he reported for duty at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. After his tour of duty, he was mustered out of the service with an honorable discharge, again at Jefferson Barracks. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia of Colorado Springs, and his five children: Virginia Lee of Colorado Springs, Joseph M. Bunting (Alyce) of Texarkana, TX, Mary Booth of Highlands Ranch, CO, Peggy Pidgeon (Jim) of Council Bluffs, IA, and James Bunting of St. Louis. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Leigh Melville; Joey, John, and Sam Bunting; Stephen, Amanda, and David Booth; David, Nick, and Danny Pidgeon. He also has two great-grandchildren: Hannah and Eli Buck. Joe comes from a large and loving St. Louis family. His three surviving siblings are William (Bub) Bunting, Hazel Tosh, and Elaine Ivery. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at First Congregational Church, at the corner of Tejon and St. Vrain Streets. The viewing will take place at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO. We mourn his passing but look back on his life with utter gratitude and look forward to reunion with him with utter joy.
