Joseph Holland Obituary

He Made Everybody Laugh
Joseph Holland could always poke fun at his life. He would be the first one to joke about his golf scores, his in-laws and his newborn boy. And his zingers, delivered just right, were a constant source of laughter for his family and friends. "He could get everybody to laugh," said his mother-in-law, Ellen Mahoney. "He was insightful and quick-witted."

Mr. Holland, 32, started working in finance after college, and later became a broker for Carr Futures. He lived with his wife, Kathy, and their son, Joseph IV, in Glen Rock, N.J. Though Mr. Holland saw humor in most things, he was serious about being a father. He was in the delivery room when his son was born on Sept. 1, and even cut the umbilical cord himself. He could not wait to pass out cigars to his co-workers. "He was really looking forward to being a dad," said his mother-in-law.

I only recently found out that Joseph was my 2nd cousin. Seems my mother (Carol Johnston, her mother was Mabel Holland) was Joseph's fathers first cousin. My family is originally from Manhattan, I now live in the midwest. Joseph and I were both born in 1968 and I attended Good Shepard school through 2nd grade, so maybe I did meet him once in my young life. My mom lost touch with many of her cousins through the years, especially after we moved from the east coast, so we too(her children)lost touch with ours. It saddened me greatly to find out that a cousin I never knew died at the WTC. My heart goes out to the rest of the family for your loss. We will never forget.

Joey,
I know I only met you once or twice but I feel like I saw you every day. I would always look foward to you coming to pick up Brian and Michelle. Heres a little poem I wrote for you:

It was 9-11-2001 we were not having a lot of fun. My cousin Joey was in the Twin Towers, on this day I wish he had superpowers. He was on one of the highest floors I wish there had been an escape door. I wished a lot of things on this day, I wished him and his newborn baby once more could play. But now I look at little Joey all playful and happy I just wish he could of met his daddy. But now we have moved on with our lives and so has his really nice wife. I still wish I could see him see him once more but that's now impossible because he's behind a golden locked door.

I love you Joey

It's now five years after this tragedy and I'm thinking of Joe, Gopal, Paul, and even Christian, Christina's young brother. We're currently working on our Bronx Science '86 20 yr reunion and so they are on my mind. Joe made me laugh so much during HS. If any family member of Joe sees this, please contact me, I would love to somehow honor him at our reunion.

The Holland Family,

Today my heart goes out to you and your families, My son was born one day before your son~ When I heard You lived a block away from me and what happened that day~ I wish I could of reached out not only as a new mother but maybe as a new friend too~ I feared you must of been overwhelmed... although I never met you I have thought about you and your family alot...On the 1st anniversary of 9/11 in Memorial Park when I saw You standing there with your son the same age as mine and heard you were moving during your speech~ I cried harder than I did all day long.... Please remember you are remembered in many hearts in Glen Rock even those that never met you or your husband..

I never met Joe, but I knew all about him. I worked with his dad, Joe II, at Fire Services in Citrus County FL. Joe II truely loves all of his kids (and grandbaby)and I was proud to listen to his fond memories of all of them, as well as his life in NY. My heart and prayers go out to all of you. As we hurt in the flesh - please remember in comfort, Joe is with the Lord, and is a Ray of Sunshine, shining over all of you. Joe II, Terry, Michelle, Brian, and the rest of the family-my prayers are forever with you all.

Joey you were the best brother anyone could ask for. I always had fun at the Yankee games that you brought me to.

Katie Kilroy

September 11, 2002

Dear Joe,

I can’t believe it’s been a year. It seems like only yesterday we were at the Yankee game with Kathy and Tara. I remember chatting with you while Kathy and Tara were in the ladies room. You and Kathy had a doctor’s appointment that day with the obstetrician so you took the day off. I couldn’t believe that you were going to be a father. And as I’m sure you knew, Tara was so excited to become an aunt. In your typical big brother fashion, you paid for everything that night and Tara had to argue with you so she could buy you a beer. It was a good night, with good conversations and some good laughs. And to top it off, the Yanks won.

I think about Tara everyday and how she lost her best friend and big brother that horrible day. You left behind this amazing little boy though, who in the worst year of her life has shown his Aunt Tara just how much love he has to give. Your spirit is alive and well in little Joe, and you should hear how she talks about him!

I told this to Tara last year, and I’ll say it again. For nearly 27 years, you were her hero. For the rest of her life you will be her angel.

Until we meet again…

When your Dad and I were putting out the "big ones" in the South Bronx he was known for two things. One was yelling out "who's better than we are?" after a tough job and the other was sticking out his chest and bragging about you. We will never forget!

I did not know Joseph Francis Holland III or his family but after reading all the entries here I feel that I know him. I am making him a quilt block for the United In Memory Quilt project I know this is a lot to ask but I was wondering if anyone could help me make this quilt block more personal with any information about Joe. From reading the previous posts I have some wonderful ideas and if anyone would like to help with more ideas it would be much appreciated.

Please email me.

I also would like to send my deepest sympathy to Joseph wife, new son, his family and many friends. I hope that by my making this block that it will be a comforting thing for everyone to see his name on this quilt.

My thoughts are with Kathy, her baby, and Joseph's family-

I attended Bx. Science with Joseph, and though I don't think we ever met, I was saddened to hear that he was a victim at the World Trade Center, along with another classmate, Gopal Varadhan. You are not alone in your sorrow as I also lost my fiance, soulmate, and best friend that day- firefighter Sergio Villanueva of Ladder 132. Everyone who perished that day were heroes and will never be forgotten...

Wishing you peace and strength to get through this-

Joe,

I think about you all of the time and still find it hard to believe that you are gone. We met back in the 5th grade at GSS and I consider myself very fortunate to had known you for so long. I'll never forget the b'ball games on Kappock against your Bronx Sci friends, cruising in the Skyhawk, the Europe trip, Apt. 5J and late nights in the Upper East Side bars (Who's up?). You were a great friend and I will always treasure these memories.

Joey,

As I wrote in a recent letter to Kathy, not a single day goes by without thinking about you. We meet many people in our lives, but few who know us through all of our highs, lows, and the much that happens in-between. Know the impact you made in the lives of those close to you. I just want to dial back to 205 E.95th Street, Apt 5J, and share our times all over again.

We are very sorry for your loss of Joseph. May his life, love and even his zingers live on in those who love him. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

In the days following these awful events I was at the Armory in NYC with all the families of the victims. My husband's cousin (Elkin Yuen) was in the same meeting as Joseph on the 92nd floor of Tower 1. One of the most vivid memories I will have in my heart is briefly meeting Joseph's mother there and seeing how strong she was. I will always admire her strength and determination. My heart broke when I heard that Joseph's wife had just had a new baby 10 days before this tragedy. There are many new guardian angels in heaven now and I know that although the pain is overwhelming they are all watching over us just as Joseph will forever watch over his son. God Bless your entire family...we will never forget. Our prayers will always be with you.
