Joseph L. Knott Obituary

Joseph Knott wanted to become a sniper, but to his family he was a warm, compassionate man who liked to draw and write poetry. "He liked to act tough on the outside," said his mother, Pam. "We used to make fun of him because he'd pose like he's all tough and inside he's a great big marshmallow." Knott, 21, of Yuma, Ariz., was killed April 17 when enemy forces used small arms fire and a makeshift bomb to attack his convoy in Baghdad. He was based at Fort Carson. Knott grew up playing with GI Joes and loved everything related to the military. He was in the varsity band in high school, and drew and wrote poems _ though he rarely shared them with others. He enlisted in the Army about a year ago in part to emulate his older brother in the Navy, his mother said. He knew he would probably be sent to Iraq, but he joined anyway. "He was nervous, but at the same time he was excited to be fighting for our country," she said. "He missed home, but he felt he was doing what he needed to be doing."

I had the privilege of serving with PFC Knott. A was a few years ago older and was always taken back by what a kind, gentlemanly, generous, and just flat out good guy he was. My first son was born a few months after that day in Baghdad that took him, and I chose to give my son the middle name Joseph.
Knott was the kind of young man I would have liked to see my son grow into. Grown up now, my son asked about the man who he got his middle name from. I’m glad I found this memorial page to show him.

Joe,
It´s been almost 19 years since you have been gone. I miss you so much bud, i´ve taken both of my daughters to your grave site, multiple times. They know that they get to live in the amazing country safe because of people like you that wrote a blank check to the american people and paid with your life. I don´t drink much anymore but I do almost every year thinkin about you. You were so damn talented, and funny, you always listened. I appreciated the time we spent together, and i hope you´re smiling down on us. I was there for the fam when your Mom passed, it´s hard on them all. But i know you know that, You made such an impact on so many people in the short life you were given. There are still people thinking about you, we all love you and miss you down here. Save my a seat up there. I wanna watch you play the quads one more time.. you know me all snare no base. Miss you kid.

Pam, Jerry, and all the Knotts: You all know how much I loved Joseph, and how much Dale Smith loved to tease him. There are so many memories of him, I could fill a book. I am so very proud to have had the pleasure and honor of knowing him, and knowing that on this day, Dale and Joseph and standing before His throne and rejoicing in our Lord and Saviour. God bless your entire family. Joseph is a very special Fallen Hero to us.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Joseph, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

It's hard to believe that I will never forget someone I never got the chance to meet. But, Joseph was definitely an amazing man. I've had the pleasure of knowing his brother and sister in law. There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Pfc. Joseph L. Knott was my baby brother and even though it has been very difficult for our family we appreciate all the support others around the world have given us and the endless respect of honor for my brother who loved what he was doing. He is and will forever be the one person in my life who could make me see the light in any situation. I remember, when he was younger, having to drag him out of bed in and fight him to get ready for school.
