Joseph Merritt Obituary

Joseph Albert Merritt Jr., "Joe" was born on February 21, 1922 in Kinston, NC and raised in Portsmouth, VA. He was a loyal husband and dedicated father who went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on the 2nd day of July 2015. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Nellie G. Merritt, 4 children: Joe, Marty, Rita and Millie who blessed him with 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-granddaughters. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Julia, Helen and multiple nieces and nephews.

At nineteen years of age Joe was compelled to join the service due to the attack of Pearl Harbor. He served our country with honor and dignity for 30 years. In 1971 he retired as a 30 year Veteran from the United States Air Force. During his service he flew in thirty plus missions in World War II, served in the Korean Conflict and also served during the Vietnam Era.

While serving in Colorado Springs at NORAD he fell in love with the Rocky Mountains and decided to make it his home. It was not uncommon to find him standing at the window admiring Pikes Peak.

He will always be known for the dedication and service to his country, family and community. His courage, honesty, independence and perseverance was admired by his family and those who knew him.

Joe enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting and of course watching those Denver Broncos.

His faith in God sustained him in difficult times especially during his end of life transition.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 7th from 5-7 pm and Service will be Wednesday, July 8th at 11:00 am held at Dove-Witt Family Mortuary, 6630 South US Highway 85-87, Fountain, Colorado. Following the Services burial will be at Fort Logan Veterans Cemetery in Denver.

He will be greatly missed but live forever in our hearts.
