1929 - 2018
Joseph Patrick O'Brien, beloved husband, devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully on February 12, 2018 at his residence in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born in Canon City, Colorado, June 2, 1929, the oldest of 2 boys born to the late William Patrick and Virginia O'Brien and soon moved back to Colorado Springs. Joseph was a third generation native of Colorado.
Joseph graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1948, started on offense and defense on the State championship football team and lettered in 3 sports. He worked at Out West Printing while attending Colorado College and was a semester away from graduating with a BS degree in Pre-Med. He fell in love with his lifelong best friend and married Mary Francis in 1950. The Korean War broke out a few months later and Joseph was overseas in the Navy and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. On his return he began to work with his father in the family printing business, O'Brien Printing.
Joseph enjoyed Boy Scouts, fishing, hunting, camping and sports. He taught his sons the love of the outdoors, reading and learning. Sons Lee, Joseph and Glenn, all from Colorado Springs, enjoyed many outdoor adventures with their parents.
Grandchildren are, Daniel, (Utah), Jane (McGillis, Denver), Jessie (Goble, Ft. Collins), Michael (Denver), Sean (Raleigh, NC), Katie (Martin, Elgin, SC), Kara (Basinger, Woodland Park). The four Great grandchildren are Natalie, Cassidy, Rory and Rylen.
Rosary and viewing will be at Sacred Heart Church, 2030 West Colorado Avenue, Thursday, February 15th from 5-6:30 PM. Mass will be at Sacred Heart Church at 10:00 and graveside services will be at Evergreen cemetery, followed by a meatless reception, (first Friday of Lent) at Sacred Heart Church.
