Joseph Turner Obituary

May 21, 1938 marked the beginning of a life that touched many. Joseph Thompson Turner inspired joy, pride and determination in those who shared his love. He lived his last moments in peace with his wife Rita on January 20, 2007. Joe was one of 14 siblings born in Culpeper, VA to Thomas and Mildred Turner. Before his graduation from G.W. Carver High School, Joe played football with the same enthusiasm he continued to exhibit throughout his lifetime. In 1962, by way of the U.S. Army, Joe found himself in Colorado Springs, CO. Immediately his entrepreneurial spirit yielded a business that served not only as an occupation, but a passion as well. He was united in marriage to Rita DeFoe in 1982. Their bond was unique in its depth and integrity. In addition to visiting with his family and friends; Joe enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, saltwater aquariums and bowling. Joe is survived by his wife Rita Turner; sons, Keith Turner and Phillip Turner; daughters, Ayako Williams, Michiko Essad, Rena Wesley and Trisha Stoliker; brothers, Bradley and Mortimer; sisters, Ocie L. Butler, Jean B. Gray, Mary Scott, Shirley England, Tippie Washington and Cecil Logan; 7 grandchildren, one great grandchild, a multitude of extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Kindley Turner, Tommy Turner, Edward Turner and Burnett Turner; and sister, Virginia Turner. May his loving and charming presence remain an enduring inspiration to us all. Services: Thursday January 25, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. Swan Law Chapel 501 N. Cascade Ave. Colorado Springs, CO 80903.

To the Turner Family,
our deepest condolences. I hope it will give you some peace knowing he is no longer suffering. I had the honor and priviledge of knowing Joe for over ten years, ever since I first started waitressing at Harmony Bowl on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I am still there and I missed Joe every week, I miss his smile and good sense of humor (sometimes not so good sense of humor). He will always be remembered as one awesome, great, and loving friend.
Rita and Family, we are sorry for your loss.

Dear Aunt Rita and cousins,

I recall when you visited my family in VA. All of you were so kind; I still have fond memories of Uncle Joe's exuberant spirit. I am so happy that he was able to be at home with his immediate family in his last days; thank you for your courage and eternal devotion to him. My thoughts, prayers, and gratitude are with you.

To the family of Joe Turner,

I am yet another fortunate soul that has gotten the chance to meet Joseph Turner. I met him about five years ago through his son, Phil. Ever since Phil introduced Joe and I, he has never failed to make me laugh any day of the week, no matter what I was feeling at the time. He never liked to see another person frown.

Quite often would I see Joe at Harmony Bowl with that good ole toothpick in his mouth. If he wasn't with his beautiful wife Rita, he would be talking about her. I know Joe valued his family and friends more than anyone.

I will definitely miss attending the amazing superbowl parties that Joe and Rita threw every year at their home. Getting everyone together, playing the football game on TV, and endulging in the great food that Rita would prepare for everyone was something I had looked forward to all year!

My prayers go out to Rita, Phil, Keith, and the rest of the Turner family. My thoughts are with you through this hard time and I know that Joe is sure to stay in our hearts forever.

Rita, I met Joe at the Harmony Bowling Alley when I worked there. He introduced you and I in the early 1990's. I have not seen him since those years. I did, however, think well of him. He was a very kind man. He used to always ask me, "What are you doing is this neck of the woods?" He sure thought a lot of you Rita. You had a good man. I am sorry for your loss and pray for your family during this time of your lives. I know you will all miss Joe greatly.

Well finally at rest. No more pain and suffering. I thought about the tree that Joe bought for me when my father died in 1995. It was a golden magnolia. I have since sold the house but I often drive by to see how much it has grown. Now I have two wonderful men that I will remember each time I view the strength of that mighty magnolia that grew from such a small tree. Joe was the same. As you read the obituary it speaks of his growth. He was truly a wealthy man because of the relationships he had. What a blessed life to be married to his true soul mate. Be blessed and encouraged.

Joe you are going to be missed and the only comfort I get now knowing that you are at peace and in a better place. You had a really cool journey through life here with us and now that you have moved to a new phase I’m sure that it will continue.

It was really great knowing that you were as passionate about reef aquariums as I am and we helped each other with new technology and always compared notes. And remember all the fish stores that we visited when you came to Dallas. You also purchased one of our first pieces of Live Rock when we were starting our first reef tank.

I know that you will remember all those Cowboy games on Thanksgiving and the private tour of Texas Stadium and the Cowboy training facility at Valley Ranch that we took with the family. Also the one Thanksgiving when we had great dinner in the Fox Sports sky box at Texas Stadium and then came home and had to eat again since our wives prepared a large Thanksgiving meal. Yes that was two large dinner in one afternoon. We did not want to have anyone mad at us.

Travel well my friend and Brother-in Law.
