Joshua Steiner-Smith Obituary

David Joshua Smith was born on September 9, 1971, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Doug and DyAnn Smith. He was raised and educated in Sioux Falls and graduated from SDSU in 1995.

Upon completing college, Josh moved from the prairie to Colorado, living in Denver and then in Colorado Springs, where he met Tana Steiner. He was welcomed into her family on October 14, 2000, and to that loving relationship, three children were added and cherished. He lost his young life to cancer on August 30, 2014.

Josh loved his life in Colorado and thoroughly enjoyed sports that the Rockies had to offer. He rambunctiously rode mountain bikes, crossed streams in his jeep with his family cheering on, and enjoyed hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing. He worked at Graybar Electric for 15 years and spent the last three years of his life at his childrens' school, tutoring students and devoting his remaining time to his children.

A broken-hearted family mourns his loss: his wife Tana Steiner-Smith; daughter Ella, 10; sons Bridger and Kellen, both 8; his parents DyAnn Smith Wentler and Charles Wentler, and Doug and Barb Smith; brother, Matthew Smith and his family; stepbrothers Casey Wentler and Ben Wentler, and many members of his extended family and friends.

A celebration of Josh's life will take place at 2:00 on Saturday, September 6, at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs.

Had the pleasure of meeting Josh while at SDSU, through my brother's buddies. Always super nice to me from the start. Hadn't seen Josh for many years, and never had the privelege to meet his family. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Certainly way too young to leave them...

I knew Josh while attending SDSU and was one of the nicest people I met there; always a smile and inviting everyone out. My sympathies and prayers go out to Josh's family. Gone way too soon.

I didn't know Josh or his family. Knew Marsha in school and my heart aches for all of you. From what I have read Josh sounds like an amazing person and I have sadness for not knowing him. Peace and love to you all who know him.
