Judith Ann Siebert Pickle died on December 16, 2023, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Judy was born on April 28, 1935, in Chicago Illinois to Frederick Siebert and Evelyn Deinhart Siebert. She and her brother Paul grew up in Minneapolis and suburban Chicago. After graduating from LaGrange High School in 1953, Judy attended Carleton College in Northfield, MN, graduating in 1957. She loved Carleton as a student, where she made lifelong friends, and was a loyal alumna for the rest of her life. Carleton College was also where Judy met her husband, Joseph (Joe) Pickle, whom she married in 1958. After Carleton, Judy earned a Masters of Education from Goucher College in 1958.
After Joe and Judy married, they lived and had adventures as a young married couple in New York, Germany, and Chicago. Joe was hired as a professor of religion at Colorado College in 1964 and the couple, now with one child, happily moved to Colorado Springs. Judy also worked for Colorado College herself, training student teachers in the 1970's, and later working for the college's Hulbert Center for Southwest Studies. Judy's move to Colorado Springs began her lifelong love of Colorado, the Rocky Mountains, and the Southwest. Throughout her life Judy was a happy traveler and hiker in Colorado's parks and mountains.
Judy was a wonderful mother to three children, David, Kathy, and Steven, all of whom were born long ago and are reluctant to have their birth years published here. Judy instilled in her children a love of art (both seeing and making it), reading, dachshunds, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of Colorado. She bravely tolerated their interest in snakes, horned toads, and other reptiles and in special rocks found on walks. She passed on her love of music and gardening to at least one of her children.
Judy was a happy and active member of local educational and nature organizations and clubs, including the Women's Educational Society of Colorado College, the Tuesday Club, and the Woman's Literary Club. Judy also served as the Director of Volunteers for the Pikes Peak Hospice. A long-time member of the First Congregational Church, she was part of a team that obtained a historical preservation grant for the church.
Judy and Joe loved spending time overseas, living at various times in Germany, England and Zimbabwe, and traveling widely later in life to Europe, China, Indonesia, Cuba and Costa Rica. Judy and Joe regularly attended college reunions. Throughout her life, Judy cherished her friendships and her family. Although she struggled with health issues in her last few years, she loved being in touch with friends and family.
Judy is survived and missed by her husband, Joseph W. Pickle, Jr., her children, David, Kathy and Steven, their spouses, and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on April 27, 2024, at First Congregational Church. Further information will be shared on
