Judy Hughes Obituary

On the evening of June 15, 2015 Judy Gristy Hughes, a truly remarkable woman, passed away in Phoenix, Arizona.

Judy was born in San Antonio, Texas and raised in Wichita Falls. She later moved to Lubbock and attended Texas Tech University. In 1959 Judy left her home state for beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado to pursue a career as a journalist, and landed a job with the Gazette Telegraph.

Judy had a passion for politics and a great talent for public speaking. She volunteered for local campaigns, and was elected President of the Colorado Federation of Republican Women. She is listed as one of their Living Legends "Tiny, supercharged and mischievous, she knew how to organize and gain recognition for CFRW." She rose through the ranks of the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) and was elected President in 1985-1989 for two consecutive terms. During that period, she helped grow the NFRW and make their army of volunteers nationwide become relevant in Washington DC. An accomplishment recognized by both Presidents Reagan and Bush Sr. She met with them on a regular basis and they understood the importance of the NFRW's work. Her colleagues affectionately referred to her as the "GOP Boss."

After her time in Washington, she was asked by President George HW Bush to serve as the Administration's Western Representative for the Department of the Interior. Then to Austin, Texas to work for future president George W. Bush in the State's government administration.

In 2013 Judy moved to Arizona where two of her three children, Leigh & Eric reside.

A private memorial service was held at the Beautitudes Chapel in Phoenix, Arizona on June 19, 2015. It was a lovely memorial and her brother Tim officiated.

She is survived, by her son Grant LaMora of San Francisco, California; Daughter Leigh Ceballes of Scottsdale, Arizona; son Eric LaMora of Phoenix, Arizona; Sister Mary Lewis of Lubbock, Texas and brother Tim Gristy of Lubbock, Texas.

jUDY AND i WERE FRIENDS AND KINDRED SPIRITS FROM THE TIME WE MOVED TO COLORADO SPRINGS.SHE SUPPORTED MY CAMPAIGNS AND WHEN I SERVED AS COLORADO FED.OF REPUBLICAN WOMEN PRESIDENT, WE TRAVELED TOGETHER AND ATTENDED NATIONAL GOP CONVENTIONS.SHE ALSO SUPPORTED ME FOR A NATIONAL APPT. SHE WAS IN CONSIDERABLE PAIN FOR THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS SO THAT IS THE ONLY CONSOLING THING ABOUT HER DEATH. THE LORD LOOKED DOWN AND SAID "TIME TO COME UP A LITTLE HIGHER". WE HAD GOOD TIMES, FUN TIMES AND SUFFERED THROUGH SOME CAMPAIGN LOSSES BUT NOT BEATEN DOWN. GOD BLESS JUDY AND HER CHILDREN!

I was so sorry to read about Judy today in the Gazette. Judy and I met many years ago. She came to our BS with other dear friends here in Colorado Springs. When I move to Dallas we lost touch with each other. I remember particularly Eric and how cute he was at our gatherings at the Rac Club. You all even came to visit us in Dallas. My love and condolences go out to you each one. I know she made a difference in a lot of people's life. I am a Republican. As I recall Judy during our Bible Study days made a commitment to Jesus Christ. I hope she shared that with you all. My husband John died in May. They knew each other. I know she will be missed. My love to you each. Erol Agnos

Missouri extends it's deepest condolences. Judy came to Missouri many times to speak and motivate our Republican women. She was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged to know her. Violet Corbett, past MoFRW President

She was my mom. And words can't possibly describe how I feel about her and how grateful I am for everything she's done for me. I find comfort in knowing that she is in a better place without pain. My husband Steve and I think of her every single day. She really left an imprint on a lot of people's lives.
