Jules VanDersarl Obituary

Colonel (Retired) Jules Vincent
VanDersarl M.D.
October 15, 1943
November 2, 2023

Jules Vincent VanDersarl was born on October 15, 1943 in Waco, TX, the first of four children to Jules John and Clovis Juanita (Kemp) VanDersarl.
The son of an Army Air Corps pilot, Jules called many places home during his youth, including Las Cruces (NM), El Paso (TX), Okinawa (Japan), Spokane (WA), Superior (WI), and Lincoln (NE).
Jules fondly remembered the long voyages to and from Okinawa on a Navy steamer not long after WWII, where they broadcast Notre Dame football games over the ship's PA, an early memory from his lifelong fandom.
In Wisconsin, he developed a love for fishing, and earned his Eagle Scout award at only 14 years of age.
In Nebraska, under his father's tutelage, Jules became an outstanding golfer. He won the individual high school state title three times, and represented Nebraska in the 1960 International Jaycee Junior Golf Tournament, where he lost to future professional golfer Raymond Floyd. Jules, along with his 1959 State Championship teammates, were inducted into the St. Pius X High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.
Jules also excelled academically and attended the University of Notre Dame to study pre-medicine. This was followed by St. Louis University Medical School, where he met Missouri native Mary Martin, who became his wife. They eventually had four children.
As an Air Force physician, his family relocated often, highlighted by a three-year assignment to Madrid, Spain. However, Jules always dreamed of Colorado, the longtime home of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Finally, in 1985, he was assigned to the USAF Academy Hospital. It would be his last
assignment. He retired from the Air Force in 1991 as a Colonel, after 24 years of service, including as the Chief Consultant to the USAF Surgeon General for Dermatology during his final 9 years.
Jules then entered private dermatology practice in Colorado Springs, where he enjoyed caring for and connecting with his patients for another 26 years.
Just one week after celebrating his 80th birthday, Jules suffered a sudden health event while visiting family in Maryland. He died peacefully, surrounded by family on November 2, 2023.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary; four children: Elizabeth (Kevin) Finnegan, Barbara VanDersarl Slocum, Lesley VanDersarl, and Jules (Deborah) VanDersarl; six grandchildren: Collin Finnegan; Vivian, Lydia, and Henry Slocum; and Jameson Jules and Vincent Jules VanDersarl, three sisters: Pamela Janine (Joseph) Paduh, Patricia (Timothy) Cobb, and Paula (Gary) Mosman; and many
nieces and nephews.
A visitation will take place on Wednesday, December 6, at 5-7:30pm at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave. A rosary will be held on Thursday, December 7, at 9:30am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 2650 Parish View, followed by a funeral mass at 10am. Reception to follow. Burial will take place at Pikes Peak National Cemetery at 2pm.

It is 9/23/2024 and after accidentally falling onto this site today I had no idea that Jules had passed. I am truly amazed after reading about his dedication and his many accomplishments. I am Lisa Van Dersarl-Knowles. Frank Van Dersarl was my grandfather. I left Denver in my 20's to work in law enforcement in the Dallas and Hill County areas. I married Patrick Knowles, a clinical psychologist and educator,
later in life and currently reside in Fond du Lac,WI. One day I do hope to look up some of my wonderful relatives mentioned in Jules information. In the meantime-I wish you well and please know that I care for your loss.

I am so very sad to hear of Dr. VanDersarl's passing. He was the most kind and caring doctor I ever worked for. He treated his patients with so much respect and care.
My sympathy and heart go out to Mary and his family. We have lost a wonderful man.

Mary and Family: I was sad to hear that Jules passed away suddenly. He was one of the nicest, kindest men I ever knew. Always a smile on his face and never an unkind word. He and Mary were true partners for life. He was so proud of all his kids and loved you all dearly. I have fond memories of playing in several Notre Dame golf tournaments with him and admiring his near scratch handicap golf game. He was a loyal son of Notre Dame. I know you will have warm memories of him to comfort you in the coming months.
