Julianne Gilbert Obituary

Julie Gilbert, a 14 year resident of Colorado Springs, passed away on October 1. She was born and raised in Greensburg, PA, a daughter of the late John F. and Mary (Lopushansky) Mesich. Julie was Catholic by faith.

Julie lived a life of kindness, warmth, and caring. She was truly a lovely and kind woman in every respect with an inner strength in herself and a true curiosity of others.

Julie's career was also one of caring. She worked throughout her life as a nurse, primarily in the mental health and addiction fields. Her nursing career included long stints in Florida and Lexington, Kentucky and short times elsewhere before landing in Colorado Springs in 2001. In Colorado Springs she primarily worked at Cedar Springs Hospital and TriWest Health Care.

Julie became a true Colorado girl immediately. She loved hiking, cycling, camping, and the outdoors and fresh air always. And flowers! And her loyal Weimaraner companion Abby. She was as strong, fit and energetic as people come.

Julie made new, close, lifetime friendships everywhere she went. She lived and loved wholeheartedly and put a lot of life in her far too short years with us. She retired early in order to put more time into family and friends and to travel the world with her life partner Gary. She poured herself into developing beautiful relationships with Gary's children and mother. In the last 5 years she was able to enjoy the beauty and cultures of many faraway places including lengthy visits to Israel, Italy, Guatemala, France, London, Amsterdam, Maui, Ireland, Thailand, Vietnam, and countless others wonderful places plus endless camping road trips around the US.

In addition to her parents, Julie was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Mesich. Julie is survived by her brother Thomas Mesich and his wife Joyce and her sister Barbara Dean and her husband Bruce all of Greensburg, PA.; by nieces and nephews Brian Mesich (Susan), Pamela Kaczmarkiewicz (John), Roberta Springer (Eric), Susan Huff (David) and MIchelle Dean; and a number of great nieces and great nephews every one of whom Julie was very close to. Julie is also survived by her life partner, Gary Sondermann, his mother Marion Sondermann, and Gary's children, Dylan Sondermann and Graham Sondermann.

A 'Celebration of Julie's Life' will take place in the Deco room of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (30 W Dale St.) from 3 - 6pm on Friday, October 23. Words of reflection and remembrance will begin approximately 3:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Julie's name to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, 60 Abbot Ln, Colorado Springs, CO 80905. Or, as Julie loved flowers, bring flowers as you wish to her celebration, but you must bring them home to honor Julie in your own home!
