Karen Cooper Obituary

Karen Honnell Cooper 1948 - 2011 Karen Honnell Cooper was born and raised in Visalia. She left to see the world, and then she came back home and changed the world. Through her commitment to family, work, and community, she remained true to her belief that we all should leave the world a better place than we found it. Karen attended Visalia schools, and after graduating from Mt. Whitney High School, left Visalia for UCLA as a Regent's Scholar. The lure of the '60s movement and its focus on social change drew her to UC Berkeley, where she excelled academically. After her junior year, she left for a summer tour of Europe - a trip that opened her eyes to the world. During her early 20s she also traveled through Africa, South America, and Asia. She backpacked and took risks - including taking the last public flight out of Laos to Thailand as the Communists took control. Between travels, she completed her education at Berkeley, earning her bachelor's degree in political science in 1971. After high school, Karen's life-long friendship with Chris Cooper became a romance and he wooed her from a teaching position in Canada. She packed her worldly belongings into a VW van and the two married in December 1975. They planned to travel, move to a big city and earn advanced degrees. But first came a move back to Visalia and a baby girl in 1981. They came to realize they loved living in Visalia, having a home, and being with family. Karen added a California teaching credential to her resume and worked for several years as a substitute teacher in Visalia and Cutler-Orosi, followed by work in mental health counseling and adult education. Along came her second daughter and then a son. Karen's boundless energy was now focused on raising her children, sharing with them her love of learning, laughing, and caring. Her children describe her as their best friend, one who would always listen and make time for them, but never lose sight of her role as mom. Karen would guide, encourage, sacrifice and always put them first, even while working full time, earning her Master's Degree in social work, and volunteering for every good cause in the community. She was their mentor, their conscience, and their sounding board. She taught them to balance passion with pragmatism and to make a difference. After working as a mental health worker at Kingsview Corporation, and as regional director for Proteus Training & Employment, Karen began what became her life's work with Family Services of Tulare County in 1990. The organization had just three employees, a small office, and a 16-bed shelter. Under her guidance, it became one of the most respected programs in California, and her name became one of the most regarded in her field. Today, Family Services has a domestic violence shelter and a transitional housing program; operates the Rape Crisis program for all of Tulare County; provides domestic violence awareness programs; offers services for those affected by HIV/AIDS; has adult and children's counseling centers; and offers classes in anger management and parenting. Karen was always motivated by the mission statement of Family Services, which is to foster a community of healthy people in supportive relationships and safe environments. Karen's leadership in the field led to an appointment by Gov. Schwarzenegger to the California Domestic Violence Advisory Council, and she also served as chair of the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. Her perspectives could have been considered radical in a conservative community, but she balanced her views with pragmatism, strong ethics, and her Methodist upbringing that taught her that good works are the action plan of her faith. Through the years, Karen lent her energies to a wide variety of causes and organizations. She supported bipartisan political campaigns at local and federal levels, volunteered with the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Visalia program, and recently served on the Citizens Oversight Committee for Measure R. In addition to her focus on justice, nonviolence and fairness, she believed in the value of helping to create opportunity for dignified work. Her efforts have been rewarded with many awards over the years, including the Chamber's Woman of the Year, Assembly District 34 Woman of the Year in 2008, the Ruiz Foods Danza Award in 2011, and the Soroptimist International Sierra Pacific Regional Women Helping Women Award. Karen's courageous battle with cancer ended on Christmas Day. Her life was a gift to all who knew her. Karen is survived by her husband, Chris, of Visalia; daughter, Jayne Elisabeth Cooper, and husband Andrew Kirshenbaum of Brooklyn, NY; daughter, Paige Ellen-Christine Cooper of Brooklyn, NY; son, Matthew Guy Cooper of Visalia; her father, Charles Guy Honnell Jr., of Visalia; sister, Lisa Honnell Willis and husband, Greg Willis, of Los Osos; and sister, Susan Ellen Honnell of Cayucos. She is preceded in death by her mother, Ellen Nelson Honnell. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30 at the Visalia Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held in January. Donations may be made to the Karen H. Cooper Legacy Fund, in care of Family Services of Tulare County.

In addition to the many contributions in her lifetime (many of which I just read about today), Karen was known by her Visalia duplicate bridge buddies as COURAGEOUS. Throughout her battles with her cancer(s), she retained her special smile and her sense of humor, particularly with her favorite bridge partner, Howard. The two of them could jab at each other and laugh with each other; they had a very special relationship. She created memories for her family and they will carry them in their hearts in the years to come. What a wife, mom, friend and true CHRISTIAN! She walked the walk and talked the talk and our Lord blessed her for it.

Dear Honnell&Cooper families,
Karen was the "glue" of many things and people. She was the one to take the lead and knew how to turn it over when she mentored the people she took on. So many lives were helped, secured and lifted up with her guidance and sense of humanity. But her personal beauty, humor and reputation will never be forgotten by those that loved her, worked with her or were fortunate enough to be a close friend or family member. I'm sure she is now at "Sisler's Beach", getting it ready for all to follow and what a grand time that will be (again). Peace to all of you and Karen for showing the love and strength that we all need to remain strong in these difficult times of loss.
Fondly,
Hugh Baca & family

Lisa, Susan, Chris and kids -

Karen was an incredible person - but what stays with me over the ~55 years she was my friend was her incredible kindness. All her other fabulous attributes were true, but she was always kind and a true friend. And I'm truly going to miss her laugh.

I tend to remember the littlest things, and with Karen it is Hearts, spoons, and bodysurfing at Cayucos. In a greater sense, Karen, you were an individual who I knew was a role model from an early age. Karen, you served as a moral compass for me at an early age. Karen always provided a human perspective to life's issues. Thanks Karen for being a good teacher. Thanks for your thoughts at my brother Stew's memorial. Our thoughts and prayers go to Chris, her children, Lisa, and Susan, and Guy, and the recognition of a wonderful human being, thank you Karen, Bob Sisler

I never had a big sister, but that is what Karen was for me. Our families were together for many summers during my early years. The strongest memories I have of Karen are her infectious laughter and her words of wisdom. She loved giving advice on the best way for me to conduct my social and educational life in Jr. High and High School. Just what a big sister would do. I loved her.

I am glad I had the pleasure of working side by side Karen Cooper, as she trained me during my internship with Fresno State. It saddens me to see that she is gone. Time stands stills for no man. Karen, did much and like I told her, "I was truly glad I got the opportunity to work with a woman like her." She was Amazing, gifted, talented and overall admired. She cared about the Domestic Violence Shelters all over the world. I will hold on to the things she demonstrated and shared. Karen is gone but truly not forgotten. A piece of her lives in everyone she has touched and/or influenced.
