Karen Mummey Obituary

Karen Kay Mummey
Karen Kay (Miller) Mummey passed unto the Lord peacefully Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at the Lehigh Valley Health Network Hospital, Cedar Crest Blvd., Salisbury Township, PA, in the arms of her loving husband, Rodney, after being surrounded earlier by nearly fifty praying relatives, friends, and church acquaintances. Born in Slatedale, PA on January 30, 1943 to parents, Lester L. and June I. (Wehr) Miller, Karen attended Slatedale Elementary, Slatington Junior High and Senior High Schools, Lehigh County Community College, and Allentown School of Cosmetology as a licensed beautician serving family and friends. Prior to marriage, Karen worker at Hesss, GAC, and several jobs nearer home as Rodney worked to earn his degree from Muhlenberg College. After marriage, Karen first joined Rodney as he served in the U.S. Army before returning to Slatedale and a secretarial/accounting position with the American Nickoloid Co. in Walnutport from 1968 to 2001. After retirement she and Rodney enjoyed traveling, shopping (often through windows only), time with family and friends, church every Sunday, and faithfully observing a half-hour of Bible study and worship first thing each morning at the same table, chair, and location her mother used as Karen cared for her. Karen was a Northern Lehigh Jaycee Wives charter member and she was followed by many relatives and friends. She was a life member of the Pastorius Home Association, Inc. She, with Slatedale school classmates, AnnaMae (Bauer) Weaver, Felicia (Evans) Farber, and Sara (Neff) Kisthardt, formed a growing ladies lunch gathering for the SHS Class of 1960. Karen faithfully served for nearly 30 years as a Toddlers Sunday School teacher at Blue Mountain Community Church, Palmerton, PA (formerly Sonlife Church). She was previously a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Slatedale, PA where she sang on the choir and actively joined the OYYA group. In her home, Karen selflessly cared for others- maternal grandmother, Daisy Miller; father, Lester Miller; mother, June Miller; uncle, Vincent Lichty; aunt, Elsie Lichty; and Rodneys mother, Margaret Mummey (all now deceased). She raised Rodneys sisters, Valerie and Veronica; and brother, Robert Mummey; also later caring for Roberts children, Veronica and Mark. Karen also cared for others beyond her home as needed, freely comforting, caring, and sharing Christs love throughout her life. Survivors: Survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Rodney; sister, Carole A. Miller (Kay McGucken), Tampa, FL; sister-in-law, Sandra (Moyer) Miller, Orefield, PA; and nephews, Michael Miller, Slatedale and Jonathan Miller, Walnutport; great-aunt, Fern Ockovic of Allentown and her daughter, Susan, Aunt Elaine Peter of New Tripoli; and 60 Mummey family members. She was predeceased by her brother, Creighton Miller. Karen will be missed by fellow church members, friends, relatives, and classmates from Slatington High. As Rodney wept for the love of his life, he also rejoiced knowing that Karen was reborn to the glory of God. Services: Visitation on Friday, November 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Blue Mountain Community Church, 25 Oak Street, Palmerton. Memorial service to follow at 8 p.m. A meal will be served after the service, in the church. Interment at Slatedale Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 16. Contributions: Contributions may be made in Karens memory to Blue Mountain Community Church.

Rodney and Carole, you both are in our thoughts and prayers. May God be with both of you in your time of sorrow.
I will miss our long telephone calls. We always ended up talking about all the time we spend together growing up and how we would sit in our Mammmy Wehr,s walk in closet and discuss what we thought were really difficult problems. I will miss all that reminiscing with her. Karen was a wonderful cousin.

Mr. Mummey,
I am so sorry to see your wife passed away. May God give you the strength you need to get through these very difficult times.
She will physically be gone but her spirit will never ever leave your side. Trust me.
Her pain and struggling is done. Your wife is with God, family members, friends simply "rejoicing" in the Glorious heavens.
God be with you Mr. Mummey. You must be strong. Your wife will remind you in "her own way" when you're not.
Prayers are send your way....

Dear Rodney (and all the Mummeys), my heart was heavy when I heard about Karen. I had seen her at Wegmans since my mom got sick and she completely turned my mood around. This poem, I do not know where it comes from except that I have it saved on my computer, it has always been a comfort to me when someone or some furry friend has gone to the next world. I hope it will bring comfort to you.

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there,
I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there.
I did not die.

Love to all!

November 15, 2013

Karen, you will be missed more than I can say... you were always happy and smiling, even when I know that you had to be in pain, confused or uncomfortable. You were there for me to talk to when I was having trouble with my son, and bringing me short stories to read that were related to my situation, even though you had problems of your own. Your shoulder was always there for me to cry on whenever I needed it. We had an awesome time together at Stretch Class and especially at Zumba Class..I'll always treasure the fun we had together. "Can you PLEASE give me a ride home so I don't have to walk up that huge hill?", I recall asking you more than once after Zumba Class. Remember the fun time that we had together at the "Class of '72" Slatington High School Reunion. Remember us talking about "stick lady" the waitress (My EX's brother, my EX brother-in-law's GF) and how we laughed and laughed cause I didn't want her to see me or know who I was. I could go on and on, but you know, R.M.A.C.I.R.Y. This goes to a really special woman who, whenever I speak of her in the future, I will always remember as the "Lady with the incredible smile.."

Karen is a great and giving soul, and I can't help but feeling like an angle was simply called home (she was needed elsewhere in the universe). She was my baby-sitter back in Slatedale in the 1960's, then mentored me through hard times in the 70's, and became a very close friend throughout my life, despite our geographical distance. I will miss her, but am comforted that she is in her heaven now - what a greeting she must have had there!!! Rodney and Carol, I can't help feeling like she's with Bob, June, Les, and her cat Winston - I'm so sorry for your loss - and feel so blessed to have known Karen.

Dear Rodney and family: Karen and her mother June were the sweetest most caring women I have ever known. They were something I can only hope to be women of quiet faith, true examples of inner serenity. I can close my eyes and remember the last time I spoke to her and her warmth encircling me. She will be missed by all but a true gift to all who knew her. I am sorry I am out of town for her services but know that I am there in my heart.
