Karin Jackson died peacefully on April 10, 2018 at home with her husband at her bedside. She was 86 years old.
Karin was born in Oak Park, Illinois, the daughter of Dewey and Dorothy Fagerburg on April 3, 1932, the youngest of three children. She grew up in Hinsdale, a suburb of Chicago, attending local schools there and later graduating from Chatham Hall School in Virginia in 1950. She loved swimming and especially diving, where she was particularly adept. At one point she entertained the possibility of making the United States diving team for the 1952 Olympics and had begun serious training in Chicago when, in 1949, she contracted polio. That ended her athletic endeavors, and while surviving and capable of living a fully engaged life, and managing to travel with her husband, David, to Europe for three months in 1976, to India for eleven weeks in 1986, and to other areas of the world including New Zealand, England, Mexico, and Japan, it nevertheless left her handicapped for the remainder of her life.
Karin was an accomplished woman. A successful realtor for a number of years in Santa Fe in later life, she was also a fine amateur photographer who developed, cropped, and printed her own black and white pictures of the Southwest.
Further, she was a dress designer whose work while at the International Academy of Fashion Design in Chicago was later featured in Handwoven, the magazine issue of January/February 1991. She was also a spinner and weaver whose creations headlined articles in several magazines including the Spring 1995 issue of Spin Off: The Magazine for Handspinners. Then too she gardened, she painted, she knit, quilted, and sewed. And above all, she combed, spun, and wove wool into the clothes that she made for her remarkable, prize-winning teddy bears.
But of all that, her greatest legacy was that of her husband and four children. As for the children, to have given birth to them and to have raised them to be good, kind, thoughtful, considerate adults, each of them endowed with a marvelous sense of humor, was to her the fulfillment of her life. In their early years, she cooked for them, she read to them, she helped them with their homework. In their later years, she supported them and encouraged them regardless of their ups and downs. And all the while, particularly by example, she demonstrated what it is to be a caring, decent, and loving human being.
Karin Jackson in life was greatly admired and greatly loved. In death she is deeply missed.
Survivors include her husband, David; her children, George, Sukie, Christine, and Ann; and her nine grandchildren.
