Kate Gallagher Obituary

Kate Elizabeth Gallagher, 26, passed into eternal life March 13, 2012 with her family and fiancée at her side. A memorial service for area family and friends will be held on 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island with Rev. Sid Huston officiating. Private family inurnment will be in Grand Island Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A celebration of life was held on March 17 at Tri-Lakes Chapel in Monument, CO. Kate was born at Kadena A.F.B. Okinawa, Japan on Jan. 2, 1986 to Mark and Gail (Apfel) Gallagher. Kate grew up in various cities around the world and graduated from Air Academy High School and attended Pike's Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kate volunteered for the Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) program at her church. She was a founding and active member of the F.L.Y. young adult group. Kate had a great love for children and previously worked as a child care provider. At the time of her death, Kate was awaiting a liver transplant, but upon her death was able to become an organ donor herself. In addition to her parents, Kate is survived by her brother, Daniel (Ft. Collins, CO), fiancee, Casey Osburn (Colo. Springs, CO), grandparents, Gaylord & Joan Apfel (Grand Island, NE) and Lee & Irish Gallagher (Omaha, NE), aunts and uncles: Cheryl & Tim Dunagan, Beth & Kevin Bartlett (Grand Island, NE), Mark & Sherry Apfel (TX) Kay & Rob Parlor, Jenna & Brian Gabrial Gallagher (Omaha, NE), Mary Gallagher & Angelo Aversa (France), Trisha & David Boisvert (MA), Michele Gallagher (NY) as well as numerous cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sailing Heals, Inc. (www.sailingheals.org) or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (www.themmrf.org) A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam And for a brief moment its glory and beauty belong to our world But then it flies again And though we wish it could have stayed... Dear Gail, Mark, Dan, and Casey,
I was heartsick to hear of Kate's passing. She was one of my favorite students I taught in my 30 year teaching career. I cannot even imagine how difficult this is for your family. I have so many memories of her courage and perseverance during her 4 years at AAHS. A light has gone out in all of our lives. My heartfelt sympathy to you all.
